A Letter To My Mom On Her First Day Of School

My mom has been teaching elementary school since I was a second grader; I’m now a junior in college. My mom and I are very close and until I left for school I’d always been there for her first day and it’s really hard not to be there with her. I’ve been seeing all these posts from parents on social media about their kids on their first day so I thought since I can’t be home for her first day I’d have a little fun and show some love for my sweet mom!

Dear Mom,

Happy first day of school! Don’t stress about it kid, you got this! This is going to sound completely out of character, but don’t paint your nails until week two. You’re not going to have time and then they’ll chip and that’s a real problem that you don’t need in your life. Don’t forget to grab some accessories out of my room. It’s all free game, my friend. Make sure you fill your cup up with sweet tea before you leave home, we both know it’s the best way to start your day. If there is someone hogging the copy machine I give you permission to shove them out of your way…no judgement here. ;) Don’t worry about what’s not done or what you should’ve finished. What’s done is done and you’re going to do great. No matter what you’re going to knock it out of the park. If another teacher gives you any attitude you just walk away with your head held high, then text me her name…I got you! Cut yourself some slack and just enjoy the day. You don’t give yourself enough credit. Those kids are lucky to have you, trust me…I’m your kid so I know stuff. Before your kids come in say a teensy prayer for you, for them, for the school year and then get up and rock it. You’re the sweetest, kindest person I know. You were meant to be a teacher. You get kids and they get you. You make a difference. Don’t let yourself or anyone else make you believe otherwise. Own it, Mom! Know that your little girl is super proud of you every day and that I’ll be thinking about you and praying for you all day! Good grief quit reading this and show ‘em what you got! I can’t wait to hear all about it! LOVE YOU!

If your mom is a teacher who is starting school share some love for her. Let her know how proud you are and that you’re sure she’ll have a great year. Also, you other teachers out there should watch your step. My mom is texting me your names…

To teachers everywhere, HAPPY FIRST DAY!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
