A Letter To My Kindergarten Self

Don't be afraid.

A Letter To My Kindergarten Self
Kristi Johnson

Hi Little One,

It’s me. I'm just stopping by to tell you that you have nothing to worry about.

There will be people who ask you, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” every day of your young life. I’m here to tell you, it’s OK not to know. It’s OK to change your mind. But most importantly, it’s OK to dream big.

Growing up, you’re going to think that you want to be an astronaut, a singer, a professional athlete or a teacher; all of which are great career choices. But, you will change your mind every week and that’s OK.

Just know, in 15 years, you will be a junior in college, still getting asked that same question.

You don’t have to have it all figured out at age 5, and you also don’t have to have it all figured out at age 20. But, whatever you do, just remember to follow your dreams. Whether you want to be an artist, a scientist, a mom -- you can do whatever you set your little mind to and you’re going to be the freaking best.

Over the next 15 years, you will learn that this life is made for friendship, adventures, memories and trying new things. You will face good times and bad ones too, but just know that you can handle it. Don’t be afraid.

Your parents will tell you no and you will hate them for it. But remember that they always know what’s best. Remember to tell them you love them. Tell them how cool they are, hug them in front of your friends and never forget to thank them for all that they do for you. There will come a time when you will realize that you’ll never be able to repay them for making you into the person you are today.

You will get your heart broken, you won’t get offered that job, you will lose family members and pets, you and your best friend will get into a fight, you will hate your body and you won’t be liked by everyone you meet. I’m here to tell you that you will be OK. You will thrive in those hard times and if anyone can handle it, it’s you.

You’re stronger than you think, you’re wiser than you believe and you are so loved.

Oh, and when that boy asks you out on that date, say yes.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
