A Letter to My Elementary School Friends

To all of my elementary school friends,

Some of you may remember me and some of you probably don't but that's okay. I remember you. It is weird to think that we were in each others lives for six or seven years and now we have gone our separate ways. Some of us are in college, others are working and some people are even getting married. Yes, married!

I remember the last day of elementary school. Not only were we saying good-bye to some people but we were also leaving behind the only school most of us knew. We grew up on the same playground. We played tag because the playground aides told us we couldn't and it was cool to break the rules. We shared stories about holding hands with boys and only dreamed of our first kisses. Even though we all shifted around from year to year with different classes and teachers we were always friends. No matter what, it was pretty much the same 90 kids getting shuffled around anyway so in a way we became like one really big family. We made it to sixth grade and we all felt like we ruled the school but all too quickly we were celebrating our sixth-grade graduation.

Junior high school seemed like the worst thing that could happen. Our family was being split up between a few different schools. Some of us were fortunate enough to be able to still see each other but there is a good handful of people that we would never see again. We were all scared of switching classrooms and not having recess. Everyone made the teachers sound scary. Looking back we question why we ever listened to them. Together we got through those terrible teenage years. That was a true test of friendship right there. We encouraged each other. We made new friends, but never forgot each other because our friendship went all the back to kindergarten. Holding hands became childish and it all about getting that first kiss or having a boyfriend. We made it to the top grade again and everything was great... until it was time for high school.

Some of us were brought back together and again some of us were torn apart. We were reunited with friends that we hadn't seen much of in the past few years. It was refreshing and familiar in some way but at the same time completely different. We all changed a little bit in junior high school. It was weird to see how different people were, but at the core, they were the same old friends you shared stories with on the playground. Some people became star athletes and others ruled student government. Again you made new friends, but at the center of it all we were friends since the elementary school days

It is crazy to think that, yet again, we are all in different places doing our own thing. Some of us live in the same town and others have moved across the country. Some of us are in college chasing after our dream jobs while others are settling down and working. Either way, our elementary school is something we will always have in common. We may not talk or be as close as we once were but in the end, we will always be elementary school friends.

Love, your elementary school friend

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
