Dear baby sister,
It felt like just yesterday Katie and I were at grandma's, waiting for you, mom and dad to come home from the hospital. At first, I wasn't your biggest fan because another little sister was stealing mom and dad's attention from me and I wasn't ready for it. That was when I was five, and now 14 years later, you're stealing the spotlight again for a big milestone in your life: your grade school graduation.
You're about to take the big plunge from grade school to high school and I couldn't be more excited for you. You're about to grow up and I don't know if I'm ready for it. You being a freshman in high school makes me feel so old. Wasn't I just a high school freshman and you were in fourth grade? When I look at you, I still see the four-year-old who was obsessed with Dora. When you look at me, you probably see an old fart who has nothing in common with you. Well, I'm here to tell you that you're wrong.
Even though I don't live at home with you anymore, I'm always here to give you advice. Here's the first one that you will hear so much you'll probably get sick of it: high school goes by so fast. I know it's hard to believe because grade school was a long eight years, but the next four years will go by faster than you think. Take advantage of every moment you spend in high school and have no regrets.
You will grow apart from your friends from grade school. You won't see each other everyday and you'll make a whole new group of friends. There isn't anything wrong with this and growing apart from people is a part of life. You guys had a great eight years together, but these next four years of your lives will be so influential.
Mom and dad are not stupid. This is their third girl that is going through high school, so they know what's going on. Katie and I have already tried every trick in the book and you've seen us get grounded because of it. You might think, "I'll just do a better job than you two," but trust me, you will get caught. Don't think that you're smarter than them, because they know everything.
Listen to Katie and I. Katie is about to be a senior in high school and I'm a sophomore in college. We have already experienced what you're about to go through and we are more than willing to give advice. But when we do tell you something, actually listen to us, because we know more than you ever will know.
I'm so excited to watch you grow up and go through the best four years of your life. Never be afraid to shoot me a text and ask me questions. I love you and I can't wait to watch you get your grade school diploma. Happy graduation!
Love,
Your Big Sister
