An Open Letter To Moms From College Students

We definitely don't say it enough, but thank you for being so wonderful. We wouldn't be who we are without you.

Retail Me Not

Dear Moms,

Speaking for college students everywhere, WE MISS YOU. We may not call as much as we should, or visit as much as you want. We might act like we don't need you. We probably act super cool when we do see you and try to hide how much we really missed you.

But seriously, it's hard taking care of ourselves. It makes us realize how truly amazing you guys are, and how much we took for granted when we lived at home.

So thank you. Thank you isn't nearly enough, but thank you.

Thank you for being our biggest cheerleader while we were growing up. Every dance recital, athletic event, awards ceremony or performance you made sure to be sitting there in the crowd cheering us on. And when you couldn't make it to the game because you were working to take care of us, you made sure to let us know that you were always cheering us on even from work.

You encouraged us to work hard and have big dreams. You never stopped telling us that we were unstoppable and could achieve whatever we set our minds to. You told us to dream big and never give up.

Thank you for helping us through our hard times. You held our hands through heartbreaks, wallowed with us through a plethora of friendship drama and mean girls, held our hair when we were sick and comforted us through every imaginable harm that came to us. You were and continue to be our rock.

No matter what it was that was causing us pain, you were there to help, without judgment. You were and continue to be the one person we an always count on no matter how much we are hurting.

Thank you for loving us even when we were complete brats. We talked back, ignored your orders and pretty much did the opposite of whatever you told us to do while giving you an endless amount of attitude. You're a saint for putting up with it.

We were pretty horrible and definitely not friendly. We may have never said it, or even admitted how rude we were, but we appreciate the fact that you put up with all of our dramatics and attitude. You dealt with us when we were at our most immature and bratty, and you still loved us.

Thank you for making sure we always got where we needed to go. Whether it was practices, friends houses, the mall or wherever else we just "ABSOLUTELY NEEDED" to get to. You had your own things to get done but you still always made sure you had time to get us where we needed to go.

It seemed like you had the ability to control time the way you managed to get everything done all of the time. You are pretty much super woman. It must have been exhausting having to cart around bratty drama filled teenagers all the time and you did it with grace and kindness.

Thank you for everything. Thank you for being there for me. Thank you for being such an amazing mother, because living on our own is hard. Doing our own laundry, making our own food and being completely in control of ourselves and our lives is extremely difficult.

You are and always have been amazing. You are our greatest role model and strongest supporter.

Thank you for everything.

We miss you so much every day and are so glad when we get to come home and visit you. And we may not say it enough, but thank you for being our moms.

Love,

Your College Student

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
