Congrats Little Brother, you made it… Well almost. Just a couple more months and you will be graduating high school and headed for the big leagues. I am so proud of you and it’s hard for me to believe my little brother is headed to college. College is a crazy time and as your big sister I would like to give you some advice on how to handle it like a champ and kill it.
1. Get an ID.
Seriously, right now open another tab and figure out how you can get one shipped to you from China or something, maybe bribe a friends older brother but figure something out before you get to school. Even if the school you end up at doesn’t have much of a bar scene, it makes getting alcohol a lot easier and saves you from having to pay someone else to get it for you. Also, buy the cheap stuff that comes in a plastic bottle, now is the only time drinking the cheap stuff is actually socially acceptable and your body can actually handle drinking alcohol that tastes like rubbing alcohol.
2. Enjoy the time you have left.
You are probably thinking that you and the friends you have now will be in each other's lives forever, I thought the same thing but my best friends from high school and I barely talk now, one of them even moved across the country to California and I haven’t heard from her in a very long time. You will never have the opportunity to be this wild and you may never be surrounded by these people again. If I could go back in time I would spend more time with my friends and go on more adventures. Don’t waste time and take advantage of every opportunity you can to spend time with the people that matter, they might not be around forever.
3. Don’t forget about Mom and Dad
They do so much for us and I always forget that, and I bet you do too. Make sure you call them every once and awhile it will seem like a chore sometimes especially because you won’t be living at home anymore and have a sense of independence but it makes them so happy and helps them rest a little bit easier. Don’t just call to ask them for money, call them just to talk and tell them about your day, it only takes a couple minutes and makes their day.
4. Don’t be a dick
I have met tons of guys that are just complete assholes and I have met some of great guys too during my 3 years as a student, please be the good guy because there are not enough of them in college. Don’t say bad things about people and don’t do bad things to people. Wake up every day and try to be a better person than you were the day before, being a jackass is not cool.
5. Know your limits
Everybody gets wasted, I am all for getting drunk with your friends… It’s college but learn your limits. No one likes to take care of the same person every weekend, sure everybody gets to drunk every once and awhile but if it’s happening regularly, get your shit together. When you start getting so drunk, people don’t know if you are speaking English or not, trust me on this take it from someone who's been there. It’s going to take awhile to figure it out but you will eventually. Finally, always pull the trigger if you feel like you might puke, it’s better to do it yourself instead of finding out you need to unexpectedly do it later at the bar and probably on someone's shoes. Just remember, no one thinks the boy that pukes on himself or pees himself because he is so wasted is cute.
6. Work hard and play hard
You are not going to love or even like every class you take and every professor you have, but put your best effort forward always and I promise it will pay off. That being said if you work your ass off and only get a B on a paper or a test, don’t sweat it too much. You probably won’t get an A in every class and if you manage that you are smarter than your older sister and we just can’t have that. Work hard, but don’t forget to enjoy college to, go out on Thursdays sometimes going to classes on Friday with a hangover won’t kill you I promise.
Wherever you decide to go to college I know you are going to party like me, study like Emma and be as daring as Katie, but wherever you go know that I am proud of you and I am always just a phone call away.
