I'd like to start this piece by sending endless prayers and condolences to the family and friends of those who were lost or injured during the attack at PULSE night club in Orlando, Florida. We stand with you, we love you.
This news has left my heart heavy, and has pushed me to share with you all a few thoughts and words of my own to the people of this country. I will deliver this letter in segments, to properly organize and articulate my thoughts completely, so stick with me on this you guys.
1. We NEED to stop placing blame where it is not due, we NEED to learn to understand one another better.
This is the first message I would like to send, never in my life have I seen such horrific statements being made about Islam. Though I myself am not a Muslim, I have been raised by the most amazing, intelligent, compassionate, and harmless woman I know who in fact IS a Muslim. From these almost 19 years of my life, I have grown an immense respect for Islam, as I have read the Quran the way I read my bible. I was never forced into practicing Islam as my religion, in fact my whole life has been spent practicing Christianity, but one thing I know for sure is that Islam is not a religion that promotes violence. Given the way the media depicts Muslims, I don't blame many of you for thinking the things you do about the religion, there are extremists in this world who will in fact use their religion to justify their actions in all religions, this is not okay. Labeling every Muslim on the planet a terrorist is not okay either. There are over 1.6 Billion Muslims in the world, and you're telling me every single one leads a life of violence? Absolutely incorrect. Islam sends a message of peace and tolerance, I have witnessed the love and compassion from a Muslim first hand, my whole entire life. If you're the righteous Christian you claim to be, you will always leave room for understanding.
2. This attack was NOT a sacrifice in the name of Islam.
Muslims around the world are disgusted by this attack, and know there is no way this man was a practicing Muslim, in fact the shooter's father said so himself, his son in fact, was born and raised in the U.S. and had never practiced the religion. Less than 4% of all mass shootings in America are from Muslims, are we going to keep placing blame on the 4% and letting the other 96% slide? In my eyes this was an attack that was triggered by his homophobia. This is NOT okay. You don't have to understand the lifestyle, you don't have to practice the lifestyle, hell, you don't have to even support the lifestyle... but be tolerant of things you don't understand.
3. Nobody is trying to take away your guns, but policies do need a bit of cleaning up around here.
The fact that a somebody on the FBI's watch list was able to legally purchase a gun, should speak for itself regardless of your opinion on Gun Laws. I'm tired of people saying things like, "they're criminals, if they want guns they will find them", IN 1997, UK implemented Gun Policies, and there has been 1 shooting since then, 0 in Australia since Gun Laws have been placed, and there have been 372 in the U.S. during 2015 alone. Yes we can pray and yes we should pray, but when awful things keep happening constantly it's time to not only pray about it but to implement some type boundaries, it is legal for somebody to purchase an AR-15 assault rifle in the United States, our right to bear arms was given to us long before assault rifles were even a thing... why must we resort to even more guns? Again, nobody is trying to take your guns away, I'm not saying that in this message. What I AM saying is that laying down some laws that make it harder for guns to land into the wrong peoples' hands shouldn't be causing such a commotion. This was the 174th mass shooting in the U.S. since the beginning of the year, we were 164 days into 2016, 13th since the beginning of June, and the seventh since Monday. Wake up people, PLEASE.
4. It's time to not just "Pray For Orlando", it's time to pray for the rest of humanity too.
Look around, what have we become? A country once filled to the brim with love and tolerance has drowned itself in anger and fear. Something needs to be done, we must serve one another in love, regardless of the religion, ethnicity, sexuality, or political beliefs. "Hate has caused a lot of problems in this world, but it has not solved one yet"- Maya Angelou. We must open our hearts to forgiveness, to acceptance, we are so much stronger together why can't you all see that?
As I have loved you. Love one another (John 13:34)
So Allah gave them the reward of this world, as also an excellent reward of the next; and Allah loves those who do good. (Al Quran 3:149)
Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister (I John 4:21)
Those who believe and do good deeds — the Gracious God will create love in their hearts. (Al Quran 19:97)
