Freshman year is hard; it's a transition that means more freedom, more risk, and more opportunity. I wouldn't trade anything for my freshman year, but there are some things I wish somebody had told me.
It's OKAY to be Unsure
It's easy to feel like you have to know it all as soon as you get to college. Questions like "What's your major?" "What do you want to do with your life?" and even "What classes are you taking next semester?" became questions I dreaded.
But, remember that no one really has it all together in college, and that's okay. College is about figuring out what you're passionate about, and what you want to do for the rest of your life. Some of the best decisions are the ones you didn't anticipate making.
You Don't Have to be the Same Person You Were in High School
Change is good. Chances are, college is a change from your hometown and your group of friends. It's a perfect opportunity to try something new.
Your reputation from high school does not follow you to college, so have the courage to express the parts of you that you love. Be yourself, and don't let anyone or anything limit you.
Get Involved
College is different than high school in that you make your best friends out of class. Joining different organizations, teams, and even Greek life is a great way to make lasting friendships. Getting involved also helps you find and enjoy what you're passionate about!
Don't Overextend Yourself
It can be really tempting to join every organization on campus, but remember that it's important not to have too much on your plate. It is more than okay to decide that you don't have time for an activity.
Don't Let Anyone Else Make Your Decisions
College is a time of decisions. Make sure that you are making decisions that increase your happiness. Cut out toxic people who make you unhappy.
Choose a major that makes you want to go to class. Make deliberate, well-thought choices, because that's a skill you will always need.
Find a Good Balance.
My entire freshman year felt like a balancing act. Balancing going out and staying in, free time and commitments, classes and work. College is about classes, but it also about learning skills that you need for the rest of your life. Find a balance that allows you to work hard and find time to relax.
