Open Letter To My Big, Now That I'm Going To Be One

Dear Big,

It is no secret that we are obsessed with each other, a match made in heaven, titled Big and Little. I could thank you a million times over for mending my broken hearts, ordering food with me at obscene hours of the day, and always being by my side. I could talk about the crazy stunts we have pulled or the nights we have spent cuddled together in a twin bed. But this letter is not about that. This letter is about the fact that I, your Little, is going to have a Little of my own.

First off, I want to applaud you and your efforts during reveal week. I did not realize how difficult it is to find boys who will willingly take their shirt off, dance and deliver presents in front of a girl they have never met. I also did not realize how nearly impossible it is to conceal your identity. The amount of times I had to switch up my handwriting, resist the urge to have my closest friends deliver presents, or borrow friends' phones to text them is ridiculous. But you did it flawlessly. Also, thank you for getting a little bit high on modge podge and for caking glitter into your dorm room floor just for the sake of making crafts for me. I did not realize how complicated of a process reveal week is, but I respect your efforts so much more now that I had to do them myself.

Yet that was the easy part. Finding craft ideas on Pinterest is a piece of cake and bribing the kid down the hall to serenade my little was nothing. The hard part is not that I have a Little, it's that I'm a Big. Now I offer a shoulder to cry on, a person to text when it seems like midterms will never end, and the one to make sure player boys keep their distance. I have become the mom of someone who will look up to me as much as I look up to you.

At first that idea terrified me. I am still a little myself and feel I am not mentally prepared for this. But I realized through this whole process, that I can do this because I have the best role model to follow after. I realized that I have been taught the best, by the best.

So let me take a minute to thank you for preparing me for this. Thank you for being the intelligent, upbeat, open-minded human you are. Thank you for always making time for me, even during your busiest weeks. Thank you for not only the times we share together, but for the lessons you have taught me. Thank you for teaching me that I am prettier when I smile and that I should be happy with myself no matter what. Thank you for teaching me that the best kind of friends are there for you when you are down, that hugs cure most bad days, and that girls who respect themselves will always get respect in return. Thank you for teaching me that I would rather be overwhelmed doing things that make me happy than having time on my hands taking the easy route. Thank you for making me a better person. I owe so much of my happiness to you.

And last but not least, thank you for secretly transforming me into a Big. Thank you for giving me little pieces of wisdom that I can pass down to my Little. Thank you for teaching me how to be a successful role model, friend, teacher and mom.

Because if I could be half as perfect of a Big as you are, well that would be fine by me.

XOXO,

Little

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
