For those graduating this upcoming May, I want you to all follow my example and run. Run as fast as you can. Run to Canada, or Belize, or Japan. It doesn't really matter where because I've discovered the only way to prolong graduation is to run as far away from it as possible. But since I'm an awful runner and would barely make it one block past my apartment, I've decided to do the one thing I promised I would never do: embrace it.
As much as it probably pains you to read this, it pains me that much more to write it. But, as much as I don't want to graduate, I've decided to make most of it and not take advantage of the time I have left. College has given me so much more than just hangovers.
I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I've changed since first stepping foot on campus as an awkward, little freshman. I've gained confidence, intelligence (I think), friends, and pounds thanks to the devil known as the freshman fifteen.
Knowing how much of a difference college has made in my life, I'm trying to be optimistic and positive about this being my final semester. We could pout and live in denial, or we could make the most of every day and try to live it up as much as possible.
I mean, why waste the time we have left? I've made some of my best friends during my time here. Sadly, after graduation most of us won't live in the same city and won't get to hang out like we usually do. DON'T GET SAD HERE. This is only an incentive to do as much as possible together and appreciate the time that is left. Make a point to not miss out on any opportunities. If your friends are going out, go out. If your friends want to stay in and have a chill night, stay in. If your friends want to have a Nicholas Cage movie marathon, find new friends.
Overall, make friendship a priority.
Boys shouldn't be a priority. Hate to break it to you but if you aren't dating anyone now you probably won't be by May. Sorry.
School shouldn't be a priority. Mom and Dad if you are reading this take off the "n't" in shouldn't. Yes, school is important. But let's be real, our GPA's aren't going to change too much in just one semester. So if you have to choose between school and friends. Pick friends, always.
I feel like in life we always have something to look forward to. For example, right now (and hopefully at this point in the article you are too) I am excited for this upcoming semester. And I'm sure at some point, we will weirdly be excited to graduate.
To make yourself excited for the semester, make a list of fun things you can do. Go hit up some new restaurants. Go to a sporting event you haven't been to. Throw a party for something random like "I just bought a cute pair of shoes!" party or "I went to the dentist and had no cavities!" party. Basically, just do things that are fun and different to make the last semester the best one yet.
Even though I am 3 1/2 years in and am basically a professional college, I don't feel I am one to give insightful college advice. I'm actually not one for a lot of things. I'm not one for coordination, I'm not one for flirting, I'm not one for withstanding from pizza consumption, I'm not one for correct spelling, and I'm not one for advice. But if I were to give you two pieces of advice for college it would be to 1) not sweat the small stuff because the small stuff doesn't matter and no one looks attractive when they sweat, and 2) be careful with shots because shots are a straight path to nowhere and by nowhere I mean toilet.
So to those graduating in May, make this semester the semester of "too much." Too much fun, too much food, too much alcohol, and of course, too much Justin Bieber.
And to those not graduating in May, I hate you.
