An Open Letter To Summer 2016

Dear Summer 2016,

So the time has come once again to say goodbye to another summer. Summer 2016 you were certainly one for the books. You brought me so many amazing friendships and memories that I will treasure forever. You were one of the best summers I’ve had in a very long time.

Three months ago when I first came home from school I was so sad to be leaving all of my friends and my incredible school behind. I didn’t know what to expect going into the summer. I was starting a new job and honestly had no idea what to expect. I was so nervous! If only I would’ve known then how incredible you would be to me.

I was fortunate enough to start off my summer going to Disney with my incredible dance team. I spent the week with some of my best friends and got the chance to do what I love to do in one of my all time favorite places. I wish I realized then how amazing this summer would be. Some of my favorite memories from the summer were made on that trip, especially running through EPCOT trying to find all the princesses. Summer 2016 certainly started off well and just got better and better from that point on.

I came back from Disney and had three weeks before I started work. I was able to reconnect with old friends and go to a lot of my favorite places on Long Island. I also got the chance to sleep in for a few weeks before my schedule got a little crazy! I was so incredibly happy and would never have imagined the summer being any better. But to my surprise, once again, it got even better.

On June 27th I started my job as a camp counselor. I was a counselor for four and five year old girls at a very popular day camp on Long Island. I was up at 6 am every day and was at work until 5 pm. Although this may sound like an extremely grueling workday, but honestly it was something I looked forward to each and every day. I made some of the most incredible friendships and got the chance to work with some of the most amazing people I have ever met. I was given so many opportunities to be myself and was even chosen to be a captain of Color Wars! I had one of the most amazing summers as a camp counselor; I even cried on our last day of camp!!

Aside from all the incredible experiences I had…summer 2016, you taught me a lot about myself. You taught me to stand up for what I believe in and to not be afraid to be myself. You taught me to never let myself settle for anything less than I deserve. But most importantly you taught me that once I learn to be and love myself, I will find some pretty incredible people that will love me for who I am.

But now it’s time to move on to another chapter of my life, sophomore year of college! Thank you summer 2016 for all the laughs, memories, and love you put into my life. I am forever thankful!

So here’s to an amazing year!

Can’t wait to see what lies ahead in Summer 2017!

Sincerely,

Nikki

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
