A Letter To My Not So Little Sister

To My (Not So Little) Sis,

Where has the time gone? I wanted to write this letter to tell you that I am so very proud of the young woman that you have become. Although you may be younger than me, you are not only my best friend but my role model. I bet you didn't know that your older sister looks up to you, did you? I strive to be more like you every day. You are my life! I brag about you daily because you are everything I want to be and more. I do have some advice I would like to give you, though. If I could go back and take this advice, I would! Life is hard. I don't want you to ever feel like you are in this alone.

First and foremost, I just wanted to tell you to always follow your heart. Listen to it! I'm a firm believer in the fact that your gut feeling is almost never wrong. Whether it be with a friend, boyfriend, college, future career, you name it. I want you to stay true to yourself and follow your heart. You're going to have those people who are constantly in your ear trying to tell you what to do and when to do it. Please, I'm begging you, do not listen to them. It's your life baby girl! Live it how you want to!

You know when mom says that I like to make rash decisions? Yeah that's called being spontaneous. It's fun and I think you should try it (just don't tell mom that I told you to)! Get that tattoo you've been wanting, travel the world, try new foods! Never be afraid of the unknown. You're smart, I know you can handle a little bit of spontaneity. I wish that when I was your age, I would have gone out more. Hang out with that girl that always tries to create a bond with you, chances are, she's really cool and you'll make so many more friends that way, I promise. Don't be afraid to take that step out of your comfort zone.

Please, please laugh! Laugh when you mess up. Laugh when you don't. Never take life too seriously! You forgot to do your homework? You'll be just fine! You got a bad hair cut? It grows! Life is what you make it! I find myself taking things way to seriously all the time. It will only tear you down, and 99 percent of the time, it just isn't worth the worry. You're to pretty for that. Keep your head up and don't let anything (or anyone) take away that beautiful smile that makes you who you are.

By the way, I know high school sucks. At least you think it does now. Yeah, sometimes it does but try and make the best of it. Just like life, high school is what you make of it. You have so many fun and amazing things coming your way! You will have a blast at prom! Both years! I'm going to come home just to see you all dolled up. You're going to be so gorgeous. Graduation day is a day that you will never forget. It's bittersweet. You and your peers are going to finally part ways after years of being together. It's crazy to think about. You've got a while, so just make it worth your while. Forget about petty drama and ignore the cliques. Do your own thing. Strive for that 4.0 because it's really all that matters once you do graduate. You can do it! I believe in you!

I just want you to know, that I think of you daily. I would give anything and everything to have you here with me. Never be afraid to ask for advice. Never hesitate to call me. I want to be here for you, like you've always been here for me. Don't change a thing. You've taught me so many things about myself that I never would have learned without you. You deserve the world. You truly are my biggest blessing and I am proud to call you my (not so little) sis.

P.S. I'm glad mom didn't take you back to the hospital when I asked her to.

With love,

Your big sis

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
