A Letter To Myself When I Learn I'm Expecting For The First Time

Whenever that may be.

So, you found out you're pregnant?

That's great! Did you miss your period and take a test? I bet you did, because that's just the type of person you are, and I'm sure you were on the lookout if you were actively trying. Does David know, yet? If not, you should probably tell him. And make sure you do it in that cute way you thought of all those years ago when you guys sat down to have the talk about when you'd start a family.

Make an appointment with the OBGYN.

I know you hate going (remember your first visit your senior year of college?), but now you'll know for sure if you're pregnant. And you can get the prenatal vitamins the doctor told you about that make your hair, skin, and nails look fabulous. Plus, you'll also get all the information you need to know about having a child. It's going to make you feel overwhelmed, but remember to breathe and ask David to go with you for support. He is going to be a daddy after all.

Inform the grandparents.

We joked about how Grandpa Huffman wouldn't love your child as much as he loves his first grandson, however, I think they'll still be pretty ecstatic. Don't forget to tell David's parents, too! They'll be just as thrilled as you are! I don't know how many grand babies will be born between now and then before you have your first, but babies are a blessing regardless of where they fall in the line up.

Start thinking about names.

Remember how you and David made a list? Look it over and see if there's anything that sticks out. You'll both be so excited to be expecting, so make sure the name is just as exciting and special. Take bets on if it'll be a girl or a boy and always vote for a boy since you don't want a mini you running around. If you guys are still living in an apartment, look into upgrading so the baby has its own room, too.

Bask in the glow.

They say expecting mothers have a certain glow about them. Bask in it. Take on the shine you've been granted for nine months before the hard stuff comes. Take care of yourself and the baby. Have David read Harry Potter to them every night before you go to sleep and make sure they listen to Disney music. Pray for them and for you and for David. Feel confident in your body as it begins to change and don't put yourself down about how big you get. David loves you as you are and that's all that matters.

Freak out.

I saved this for last because I know you had doubts when you were in college. You know the family's history with pregnancy, and I know you'll be scared on the inside. Remember to talk to David about it. Stress like this is bad for the baby, so always tell someone if you're having doubts or you're really nervous. I believe in you and I know you'll be a great mother. You have a great support system, so trust in it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
