Dear Future President,
As a second-time voter and millennial, what you do for this country means more than a lot to me. You see, I am a college student with high hopes and dreams and deserve to live in a country where all of that can be achieved. In no way am I saying that it is impossible to do now, but there are some issues that need to be dealt with. If they are ignored then God only knows how the future of America will look. We need to make a call to action, and it needs to be done as soon as you get settled in the White House.
First off, the social issues of America have become close to intolerable. We are seeing a rise in prejudice, xenophobia, and antisemitic behaviors. Aren't we supposed to be a country where acceptance is strived for? A country where everyone should be able to live in peace and not fear for their safety? Future President, I say this because I fear for those I cherish who get bombarded with horrible comments and treated unfairly. They shouldn't be afraid to be who they are and embrace their individuality.
Our country has forever been a melting pot, and that should be something to be proud of. People have flocked here for the freedom we allow our citizens to have, but that freedom is slowly dwindling. Those who speak out against racism, homophobia, antisemitism, and much more are scolded and ostracized. Their voices have become nothing but whispers in a sea of thousands. Individuals who support the rights of minorities need to be listened to. If they go ignored our country will suffer. The opinions of everyone need to be relished and heard.
Secondly, the amount of poverty we see on a daily basis is repulsive. I know there may not be a huge amount you could do to fix that, but there on some strategies that could help. Our government could start producing products in the USA again, instead of selling out to China and other countries that do cheap labor.
Why can't we put ourselves to work? The number of jobs that would give birth to would be miraculous. It would allow people to be able to put food on their table and roofs over their heads, with minute worries. Think of all of the families who would finally be able to give their children a chance at attending institutions for higher education! After all, education is one of the greatest gifts to bestow upon someone.
This brings me to another point, the cost of college. The budget cuts have caused tuition to skyrocket. The raise in the fees has made it a struggle for many deserving individuals to attend college. There has to be some way to lessen the fees and make everything more accessible. For those of us who have to take out loans once our scholarships run out, we will eventually end up in a deep pit of debt. Digging ourselves out of there will only put even more stress on us.
Lastly, the rights of women are being violated and something needs to be done. On a daily basis, we see people think that they should have the power to dictate what women do with their bodies. This is not right by any means. Does anyone go around telling those people that how they treat their bodies is a sin and will cause them to perish in hell?
How a woman deals with an unexpected pregnancy should be her choice and hers only. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions, but some of those should not be pressed upon others. States should not have a say, and religious groups should not be able to control the decision; the woman herself should. No one should be told how to handle their own private decisions; they are private for a reason. Future President, I am begging that you help solve this problem. That you stand up and put a stop to the nonsense.
This letter may seem biased, and I may have stepped on some toes, but it's time that people open their eyes. We are in a critical situation, with not only these issues, but many more. Something needs to be done in order for the future to look bright again. We are an amazing country originally founded on wholesome and virtuous values, and it's time that we take those back into consideration (with some modifications).
Future President, as a child of the millennium, I would love to live out the rest of my life in the country I love as it grows even more and flourishes in every way possible. However, in order for it to do so we need you to help push the change. Our voices matter, but the actions that you take matter the most. Please make us proud.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Millenial
