We've all reached that point in the semester...the craziness of Halloween has passed and Christmas decorations are filling store aisles. Everything tastes like pumpkin and cooler temperatures make everyone want to cuddle up by a fire and do nothing but watch Netflix all day. Midterms are growing into a distant memory, and finals seem just far enough in the future to put off. Let's face it, it's slack time.
If you're anything like me, slacking and procrastination just make everything worse. I'm a huge overachiever and hate not using every moment of my time to accomplish new and important tasks. This giant formula of Christmas coming, midterms gone, finals far away, and getting tired of the semester equals one thing: stress. The kind of stress where I just want to crawl under the covers, eat cookies, and binge watch Jane the Virgin all day (or insert your current Netflix show of choice).
The sophomore/fall slump has set in, yet my determination to get good grades and do everything as best as I can still runs rampant in my veins. Finding a balance between relaxation and work is something I have never been very good at. I can't seem to ever ignore my work, even if that means staying up until five in the morning to finish a midterm I put off due to busy-ness and stress (it actually happened a couple weeks ago). I know we all can relate. So all of us college students stand here united, facing the fall slump. We all feel each other's pain, we all get it. So now let's try to find some ways to solve it.
We've all heard the countless studies ordering that college students get more sleep and relax to prolong life and improve health and blah blah blah. It's really easy to hear those things and claim to follow them, but harder to actually put it into practice. I personally think the most important commitment a college student can make is to his or her own happiness. Life is tough and new, surprising situations arise every day that test everyone's personal health. Happiness is key. Feeling happy with where you are and where you want to be makes everything seem to magically fall into place.
So to all you stressing college students, have faith and push through. Focus on happiness and those grades will all work out, you'll make it to that important party, and you'll fulfill all of your obligations. I promise, it'll be ok. And winter break will be here before we know it.
