Being the big sister is the greatest gift in the world. Not only am I blessed with a younger sister, but even more, blessed with a best friend. Now, we both say we have a lot of best friends, but this one goes deep down to literally our blood. There is not one thing I wouldn't do for my little sister in the blink of an eye. Whether it be a nice act of sisterhood or a brief moment of I just might kill my own sister, somehow we always make it back to the wonderful relationship with only a casual fight here and there, usually involving MY clothes, which she claims as her own. So this one is for you Jaderbug!
Dear Loser (Jade),
WOW. How unfortunate are you that your sister writes for a public column online because now I do not even have to come home to embarrass you I can do it from anywhere in the United States as long as I have WiFi!
It all started back in 2001, when my mom gave birth to the ugliest bruised thing, what I thought was a scared up banana at the time, that I now call my absolutely beautiful little sister. I thought of you as a toy for awhile, I often wondered why I could not take you for my Kindergarten show and tell, but shortly I learned it was because you were a rowdy baby and I did not want to spend alone time with you because you kind of scared me. By 7 months, you had already taken a little tumble down the stairs and busted mom’s eyebrow open with your favorite toy which we threw away shortly after. By 2, you were a crazy child, running around like a Tasmanian devil, which then transpired into pure athleticism so props to you.
At the age of 5, I got the pleasure of being the 6th-grader with the kindergarten sister. All my friends thought you were so cute and innocent, but little did they know in your spare time at home you shattered a picture frame, the ceiling fan and somehow managed to break mom’s “prized” vase, which was actually me (sorry mom!) My 6th grade graduation came around and our one and only year in school together was over. I went to Middle School and you continued on into the fabulous years of elementary school, however, this did not pull us apart one bit. Between me making you go to extra school on the weekends in our playroom, to watching criminal minds until three in the morning, to sometimes eating all of the ice cream in the house, no matter the amount. All of the years of you coming to watch me cheer, and me going to watch you play soccer made me so proud. It was fun to brag to all my friends that my sister could kick their butt any day in soccer, and you proved that multiple times in our yard.
When sophomore year came around I went through one of the hardest things I think I will every go through in my life, losing a best friend to cancer. My friends were there for me, Mom and Dad were there for me, but you stuck out the most through all of that. Not only were you too young to really grasp what was going on, but you held my hand and told me everything would be okay and now you have the best guardian angel. I know the big sister is always supposed to be the strong one but during that time I counted on you and you walked me through every step of the way and I can not thank you more for that.
Now that I am in college and you are finishing middle school, it is so sad for me to see you growing up. I can not believe my little scared up banana has turned into a beautiful talented athlete and wonderful musician. Every time I see you play soccer, watch you play the guitar and sing, or just watching you interact with our baby brother I have to fight to hold back the tears. You are not my little baby sister anymore, not only because you are taller than me, but because you are 13 and you are turning into a wonderful woman. I am so proud to be able to call you my little sister and so proud that you call me your big sis. I could not have been more blessed with such a wonderful human being in my life. A little demon baby who would then turn into my best friend in the whole entire world.
Thanks so much for being my little sis, my little loser, and my best friend.
Love, your perfect in every way big sister!
Paige
