A Letter To My College Best Friends

Don't know how I survived before meeting you guys...

A Letter To My College Best Friends
Caitlin Joseph

To my college best friends,

Coming into college not really knowing a lot of people was definitely daunting. The first few weeks of school were a little rough trying to make friends while also trying to adjust to the college lifestyle. I'd heard horror stories about crazy roommates or friendships burning out quickly in college. And being someone who was never really good at making friends, this was slightly terrifying. But, thankfully, that was not the case with our friendship.

Over time, I met each one of you and pretty much knew right away that we were gonna be great friends. I remember the very first time we all hung out together it felt like we just clicked instantly. There weren't any awkward pauses and our conversations flowed so easily. At first, I was surprised how well we got along because we're all so different. We are all interested in different subjects and activities but have a blast sharing our individual interests with each other. We've learned that we're all pretty similar, too. Maybe a little too similar sometimes, because we all start to sound just alike over time.

You guys have become my support system and my home away from home. We're basically together 24/7 and we somehow don't get sick of each other (most of the time...). We're each other's study partners, therapists, gym partners, life coaches, and biggest fans. We're constantly giving each other advice (wanted or not) and are always there no matter the day or time. We're not afraid of calling each other out or giving our honest opinion. We probably know a little too much about each other because nothing is never off limits when it comes down to our weird late night discussions.

I never realized how much you guys had affected my everyday life until we would leave school on breaks. I couldn't wake up and go drag you out of bed for your morning classes or meet you for lunch and vent because I was having a bad day. Breaks felt like the lasted for months when in actuality it was only weeks. But every time we came back, we would pick up right where we left off and were inseparable again.

I'm so thankful to have met all of you and be able to call you my best friends. I don't think I'd be able to survive without your constant support and encouragement. Thanks for always sticking by me and picking me up when I fall, which is a lot. Just know that I'll always be here for you even after we graduate and have to become actual semi-functional adults. I can't wait for many, many more years of friendship and wild shenanigans.

From,

Your best friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
