A Letter of Encouragement to Myself in 2016

Hey you,

I know you may think that you can never catch a break, that everything that comes your way never comes easy, and it's easy to let your mind turn to the worst and let you believe that you aren't capable. It's easy to let the little things be overlooked and for the big thing to take up your whole picture. But, guess what! When you take a step back and really look at your life, you will realize just how capable you really are.

You're smarter than you think you are...seriously! So what if school doesn't come as easy for you as it does to other people? That doesn't make you any less smart than the person sitting next to you in class. So next time you sit there, studying your notes, remind yourself of that. Albert Einstein once said, "Everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by it's ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing it is stupid." Don't you see? Everybody is a genius. It's up to you to decide in which way. What are you good at? What do you excel at more than others? Find what you are genius at and the world is yours. In the meantime, study your butt off this next year, you're in school for a reason.

You're more beautiful than you think you are, too. You are passionate about fashion, and beauty, and all things that are girly and fun. You let that get to your head way too much. Take off all your makeup for a day and notice that your beauty radiates from within. Honestly, you're not always gonna be the hottest girl in the room- there will always be someone that is prettier than you. Beauty is subjective. There may be differences in what people may find attractive, but everyone loves a beautiful soul. My darling, you have a beautiful soul. Don't let the darkness of the world we live in bruise and batter you into a life full of bitterness. You have the potential to have a soul so beautiful that it's scary, take that and run. And always remember, if you spend your days in complete happiness and you will never feel ugly.

Lastly, never forget your strengths. In a world that loves to highlight everyone's weaknesses, it is crucial to spend time marinating on our strengths. You are assertive, you work well with children, and you are happy. The next time you're feeling low about yourself, and unsure of your future. Remember all the strengths and talents The Lord has given you. He gave you those talents to glorify Him in the life you live. How special is that! You are right where God has called you to be, don't let that fall to the back of your mind in the middle of your anxieties.

2016 is a year for you. The world is at your fingertips! If there is anything that sticks with you this year, remember that you excel at things that other people don't and that you are brilliant in all your own ways. Remember that beauty isn't in the face, it's in the depths of your heart and the prettiest thing a person can do is smile. Remember that you have the ability to move mountains and change lives, God blessed you richly in talent.

You are capable, you are strong, and you are important.

Love, me

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
