Dear Freshman Dorm Room,
We have had some crazy times. But they are all fond memories. From the first moment I met you, I knew we would have a love-hate relationship. Let me list the ways.
I love the way you surrounded me with my classmates. It allowed me to make connections and friendships that otherwise I would not have had. I love being able to decorate my own space. I could make this new space, my new home. I love being close to the dining hall. Especially in the snow, when it was brutally cold outside, I was a short walk away from food! I love having such large bathrooms. They are great for doing my makeup and hair in the morning. I love the view. Being able to see the outskirts of the Boston skyline was an amazing privilege. Now for the hate, or the dislikes.
I dislike the noise. Although it is expected, people got very excited to be in a freshman dorm. I dislike the fire alarms. Wow, these are annoying, just because of the loud alarm part. I dislike the communal part of the bathrooms. Although it is great to be connected, this is a little too close. I dislike the stairs. Oh goodness, after the first floor, it’s a strenuous trek. I dislike the heaviness of the doors. It is like lifting a boulder every time you need to open the door. I dislike the bed frames. They are nice with a topper — a thick topper! Otherwise, you are laying on a stretched out slinky. Our love-hate relationship has taken us through two semesters and it has been a great year.
I remember the first day I moved in. I walked into this large building and walked all the way to the tippy top and walked down the hall and into my first ever freshman dorm. It was smaller than I remembered it, but my excitement filled what room was left. I unpacked all my stuff and then took it all in — the bed, the windows, my roommates, the bathrooms and my hall mates. It was good to know I had a place to call home.
Really, though, dorm room, you made my transition into college easier and I could not have done it without you. I hope that you can make another freshman or even another student very happy. They will need your traditional dorm experience to survive their first year. But always remember how grateful I am to experience my first year of college with a great dorm. Not everyone likes you, but that’s because they just don’t understand. They expect more from you than what you can give them. But it doesn’t matter, I will appreciate your hospitality.
It’s been real, dorm room. We have gone through life together. You have seen me excel and fail at my first year of college. But knowing I had somewhere to sleep, study and do life, helped me succeed and end at this point. Thanks again!
