A Letter to my "Brother from Another Mother"

You're really something else, and I couldn't thank you more for it.

A Letter to my "Brother from Another Mother"
Maggie Oberg

Since day 1, I was annoyed with you. You're the loudest, most outspoken, crazy individual I have ever met. You have an opinion about everything, and you're definitely not afraid to let it show. You can manage to make a joke out of just about anything, and frankly sometimes it's annoying how often you have a smile on your face. We've always been competitive with one another, whether that was with swimming, school, or miscellaneous other activities, and we still (somewhat) are to this day. However, through all of your weirdness, you balance me out. I've always been the more mature of the two of us, but you help keep me light and grounded when I get a little too serious. You somehow manage to make almost anything funny, but can give the best advice when it comes down to it. Sometimes, you have no filter. You've made me mad or upset on new levels, but there's no way I could remain mad with a personality like yours. Especially when we were younger, people would mistake us for siblings, even twins, but it seemed we never thought anything of it. Now, looking back, people more than likely just thought we were so annoying together, that there was no way that we didn't do that every day. I thank you (in the nicest way possible) for being my "brother from another mother". You have always been there for me, any time of day, no matter the situation. You've hugged me so tight until I thought I might pass out, and celebrated to the ends of the earth with me when something good happens. To this day, I'm not sure why I called you when I got in my first car accident our freshman year, but I will never forget how you hugged me until I stopped crying, and your mom came out and offered me a Coke (and I'm still not sure how that would've made me feel better, either). I remember we used to get in so much trouble at swim practice because we would constantly be at each other's throats, and we've had our fair share of punishments that we've had to do together. You're always there for me when I want ice cream or doughnuts, and you manage to always be in the mood for them too. We've grown up so much, and also grown so much together. 13 (or so) years of friendship, and I know you've always got my back, no matter where life takes us. Everyone and their mom has told us that we're "destined" to get married one day, and although I still have my doubts about that, I know that we will be at each other's weddings at least. To say you're my best friend is the least I could say, and in all honesty, we just know too much about each other to not be friends. Thank you for annoying me when my 3 real brothers weren't enough, but also looking out for me just as much as they do. Thank you for answering my calls and texts, and for always being upfront and honest with me. Thank you for being you because I could not be who I am without you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
