Growing up with siblings isn’t always easy. You’re naturally competitive with them, there’s always the fight about who’s the favorite child, who can ride shotgun and who gets to chose what you watch on TV. But, on the contrary, there are countless upsides to having brothers or sisters.
Dear Big Brother,
Every family has a different way of showing how much each person means to each other, like their own dynamic. I try to show you as much as I can but I probably don’t do a good enough job. Every girl has a different experience growing up with a brother, I was lucky enough to have the relationship with you where you challenged me to always be better but you also understood my struggles. I know I can look to you for motivation to do better but I can also come to you when things aren’t always going as planned, and you let me know that’s O.K. too.
As I look back on my first semester of college, especially some of the ups and downs, I have you to thank for many of the decisions I made. Living in this “hookup culture” it’s become increasingly difficult to find a guy who is worth investing time in. You have been warning me of this since I started high school. I want to thank you for always reminding me of what I deserve and how I should be treated.
You are “the smart one” out of the two of us. You were in spelling bees, did amazing in math and are an incredibly fast learner. Me, not so much, I have my own talents but school is not one of them. Lucky for me though, I get to learn from you. You set the bar high and I do my best to follow in your footsteps. All of the advice you gave me and continue to give me about college and balancing all of the work, I appreciate so much.
Going through the hard things in life, I have never been more thankful to have you as my brother. You seem to always have an answer on how to handle tough situations or an idea of what to do next. On the other hand, going through really fun times in life with you as my brother has made for some great memories. Family vacations are always a riot, you constantly make us laugh and our inside jokes about mom and dad never fail to amuse me.
Thank you for having my back, protecting me, challenging me, making me laugh and making me the person I am today.
Love,
Your Little Sister
