The 2014 Oscars are right around the corner! Airing March 2 with host Ellen DeGeneres, this award show will definitely be one for the books. Although no film critic, I am an avid movie watcher committed to buttered popcorn and movie nights. Here are my 2014 Oscars predictions for the top three categories of best picture, best actor in a leading role and best actress in a leading role.
The movies nominated for best picture are: American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, 12 Years A Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street. Out of these nine films, it will come between Dallas Buyers Club and 12 Years A Slave. Although The Wolf of Wall Street is an entertaining non-stop party movie that is popular among college students, sadly Leonardo DiCaprio does not stand a chance competing with these other films. 12 Years A Slave is about a free man, Solomon Northup, from upstate New York who was abducted and sold into slavery in the 1800s. Based on Northup's memoir, this movie will have you in tears by the end. The engaging plot and strong cast behind 12 Years A Slave stands incomparable to the other eight movies. Winner:12 Years A Slave.
Five actors are nominated for the best actor in a leading role: Christian Bale, Bruce Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Matthew McConaughey. I am biased in this category and will root for Matthew Mcconaughey, any day. Not only is McConaughey every girls’ dream, but he is also a versatile actor who has one previous Oscar nomination. Winner: Matthew McConaughey
The five actresses nominated for best actress in a leading role are: Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep. These actresses are the best of the best. All A-List celebrities, every one of them has fought for her spot. In 2010, Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep were both nominated for best actress. Sandra Bullock won for her performance in The Blind Side and she could win again. Although the graphics in Gravity may be too much for some people, as they were for me, I highly recommend seeing it. The suspense throughout the movie will keep you on the edge of your seat! Sandra, once again, showed what it takes to be an award-winning actress. Winner: Sandra Bullock.
There you have it, the 2014 predictions. Even if you are not a movie buff, catch the red carpet event on E! before the ceremony. I can only imagine what Joan Rivers will have to say as celebrities walk down the carpet.
