Martin Luther King marched, Malala wrote, and Anita Hill went to court. All these people had and or have a cause they are passionate about and let their voices ring. There's no hiding how they feel, the world already knows. So even if you're the only one standing up in a crowded room, take a stand.
As millennials, we are currently in our prime. No longer needing to carry a pass to go to the bathroom during class but also not having to experience real world responsibilities. Some may view this as a time to spend gallivanting from fraternity to fraternity without a care in the world. Although that’s an experience you should try out in your time in college, there’s even greater things that you need to discover besides the disgusting-ness of a frat bathroom.
This is the time of our lives that we finally have freedom to discover ourselves. Are we actually republican like our parents are or not? Do we really believe in those movements we supported in high school? (I’m talking to you, @meninism)? Or do you really just care about the planet and what is happening to it? This is our time to figure out what we believe in, and what to fight for. And once you figure that out, there’s so much you can do with it. You can change the world. Although that sounds rather cliché, it actually holds true. Look at the boys here at Michigan State in Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity (Fiji) who recently sent a six-year-old girl and her family on an amazing trip by sponsoring them through Make- A- Wish (check more info out http://statenews.com/article/2016/01/make-a-wish). This alone goes to show that anyone can move mountains if they take a stance. This the time to fight.
Our parents and grandparents, no matter how strict they are now, did the same thing. They fought against segregation, and fought for female rights. They proved that if someone raises their voice loud enough, they will be heard. If knowing that your elders have also done it isn’t convincing enough, just look at how much change our generation and the ones closest to us have created. They legalized marriage equality, raised awareness for serious illnesses such as ALS, and have fought even harder for race equality. These aren’t things that just happen over night, but it starts with one person feeling passionate enough to take a stand. In a country whose very first right is the freedom of speech, it’s time to start using it.
Whether you choose to write about it, march about it, or chain yourself to something about it, do something for what you believe while you still can. Help make history, and do something that will make you proud to tell your future children and grandchildren. The saying, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything” holds a special meaning at this time. You can either choose to believe that all the terrible things happening in the world is how it’s meant to be, or you can raise your voice and take a stance. Just make certain you know what you’re fighting for and fight as hard you can for as long as you can. You’ll be amazed at how much of an effect you actually have in this world.
