Let Me Get On The Soapbox

Here's what I think about recent events.

I may not be the most intelligent person in the world and Lord knows I know next to nothing about politics, but I still think it's time for me to say something.

While the tragedies that have happened in the last week have been absolutely terrible, (and yes, I actually cried about it when talking about it with my mother) I can't go more than 5 seconds without seeing or hearing either hate comments about Islam, hate comments against the LGBTQA+ community, hate comments against gun owners, or hate comments yelling back at the original hate comments. Worst part is I see the majority of it coming from the media and current/past friends. Honestly, I'm sick of all of it.

Let's get this out of the way. I don't believe banning guns altogether will solve a gosh darn thing because if psychos want to kill with guns, they'll find a way. They always do! I don't believe Muslims are the cause of all our problems, but they have become quite the scapegoat-- way to go America (not). I do believe that the LGBTQA+ community is just as human as the rest of us even if I don't quite understand every detail about their lifestyle. I don't believe white Christians are homophobic, uncaring, religion bashing hypocrites.

In short: Guns should be regulated, but banning them completely does nothing. People of the LGBTQA+ community deserve as many rights and just as much respect as you and me. Not every Muslim is a member of ISIS and not every Christian is a member of the KKK (like we make them both out to be).

It's amazing how we go on and on about spreading love and acceptance then go ahead and point at a specific group and blame them for being terrorists, homophobic, gun wielding maniacs, or (Heaven forbid) all of the above. What happen to judging a person for their character? I know I'll get a lot of hate for saying this, but come on. Almost every time someone argues that we should be focusing on judging only one person or a small group for the actions they themselves committed, someone else has to turn around and lump a community in with them! Suddenly, the entire community is at fault. I am fed up with all of it.

I may be speaking idealistically and my hope that the world will someday be a gentle place will probably forever go ignored, but for all our talk of spreading love and peace, we have nothing to show for it! We as in Americans. Our country has come a long way only to backtrack into a completely different direction! If we're not fighting about African-Americans, then it's women's rights. If it's not women's rights, it's LGBTQA+. If not that, then it's gun. The list goes on and on with no end in sight! If anything, we're trying to handle all our problems at once, but since we're America, we can handle it. We're doing "great" so far.

If you're mad at me now, then unfriend me. Disagree with half or all of what I said, then unfriend me. I'm still willing to be friends with anyone and everyone who disagrees with me, but if you no longer wish to talk to me, I won't stop you. For those who know me, then you know it took A LOT of anger to finally speak up like this, even if it is mild to what most people are willing to say.

So, how about we start acting like the Americans we keep telling everyone we are! How about we actually start trying to being loving and find solutions rather than hide behind the lies of the media! I am entitled to this opinion just as much as Muslims, Christians, the LGBTQA+ community, and gun owners are entitled to respect and understanding.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
