14 Reasons to Let It Snow
Ashley Stalnecker

Winter is my favorite season. It may be because my birthday falls in the winter months. But, it probably has something to do with the snow that falls so frequently in winter. Everything changes when the rain turns to snow. It makes winter the most magical season of them all. Here are 14 reasons why I absolutely love snow:

1. The way it falls from the sky

Have you ever seen those big heavy flakes falling? The way the snow just gently floats down from above creates an amazing ambience over the entire area

2. Beautiful blankets of untouched snow

Everything is barren in the winter from empty gardens to trees without leaves. However, the snow that lays on the ground is what makes winter a beautiful season. It completely changes your environment and things no longer look dead, but the world is instead sparkling with snow. Snow is especially beautiful before it has footprints running through it or specks of dirt from passing snow plows.

3. Seeing the tracks of animals

Whether it be bunny feet, dog paws, or the deer hooves – the travels of animals become known to us humans. I love walking by a trail of deer prints when I walk to class in the morning. There is an untold story there about the animals that makes the season all the more magical.

4. It makes the cold reasonable

No one likes cold weather. But, I especially hate cold weather when the ground is not coated in snow. The beauty of the snow makes the cold weather worth it. I only appreciate the cold when it is accompanied by snow.

5. Snow mixed into my hair

Is it just me or is it not a great feeling to walk through a snow fall, knowing there is snow accumulating on your hair and hat? I love the look of snowflakes sprinkled through my hair.

6. Snowmen and Snow Angels

I always test the snow when it first falls. I check to see if it is packing snow. Even if it is not packing snow, sometimes I still attempt to make a snowman. Regardless, I am always excited to lay in the snow and create beautiful angels on the snowy landscape.

7. Snowball fights

Some of my favorite memories from high school indoor track practice come from snowball fights with the team. I do not mind getting pelted with snow at all. It makes winter more interesting.

8. Igloos

Have you ever tried to tunnel through a couple feet of snow? My favorite part of playing in the snow was spending hours trying to make an igloo. I absolutely love the idea of getting cozy by hiding in a mountain of snow.

9. Icicles

Houses and buildings look so much prettier when icicles hang from the roofs. They are fun to pick off or just admire from afar.

10. Eating snow

Whether you make the snow into a snow cone or just grab a handful of snow from the ground, there is something extremely satisfying about eating snow. The best part – it is absolutely free!

11. Snow days

They are less frequent in college, but we still wish longingly for snow days. The snow blesses us with a free day to stay inside with a cup of hot cocoa or play out in the snow. Either way, it means not going to school and who can complain about that?

12. Sledding

Nothing can beat the freeing feeling of jumping on a sled to rush down a hill of snow. Sometimes you fall off onto the snow or crash into an obstacle but either way, it is a great time spent with friends. It is especially fun to try surfing on a sled – but also incredibly dangerous (that is the fun part).

13. Skiing or snowboarding

The winter season means we can take to the slopes. I may not be good at skiing, but it is a great way to enjoy the snow.

14. It is just magical

Lorelai Gilmore says it best – there is just something magical about the snow. I always have the optimistic feeling that with the falling of snow, there is something wonderful coming my way.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
