I have to admit it: I am a selfish person. I tend to think too much about what will best work for me in a given situation. Thankfully, though, I know someone who isn't selfish. I know someone who is fully selfless. And I like to call this person my #1, best friend, sister, and everything in between. This one's for you.
1. Flowers, flowers, flowers.
Flowers for bad days. Flowers for celebration. Flowers for tears. Flowers for laughs. Flowers for others, and even flowers for yourself. On bad days and good days, this special person has taught me the importance of flowers. The sight of flowers on your doorstep is healing medicine at its best. This special person never fails to surprise me with roses or hydrangeas on the unforgettable and hard to forget days.
2. Shoes.
A true friend puts themselves in your shoes. Being understood is something we all crave. Yet why is understanding so hard to find? Because very few people take the time to put themselves in our shoes when something goes wrong. When I'm having a problem that seems hard to understand from an outsider's perspective, this special person never fails to put themselves in my shoes until they can find understanding. Being understood brings a sense of hope. By taking the time to understand someone's story, you are their hope.
3. Trying to love your loves.
This special person pushed through a sea of people to get me front row at my favorite artist's concert. (Check out Eric Church's Instagram for proof) Mid-concert I turned over and saw her pretending to lip sync the words. Let's be honest, she had no clue what the lyrics were. But she pretended to for me. A true friend will suck it up and act interested in those weird obsessions you have. And you do the same for them.
4. A shoulder to cry on.
No matter the day, hour, or minute, this friend has always been a shoulder for me to cry on no matter how stupid my latest "crisis" is. A true friend will listen to your crisis and only after you've vented for three hours will they tell you how stupid you are being.
So here's a big thank you to the person who has taught me how to be a friend. I believe that God blesses us with angels in our lives that give us the opportunity to become a better version of ourselves. Since the freshman year of high school, you've been my angel always pushing me to be a better me.
