11 Life Lessons I Learned While In Another Country

Most of the learning you do in life is outside of a classroom.

Going to a different country can definitely change the way you look at some things. Most countries do things differently than America, and most countries just have a different outlook on life than America. After I graduated high school last year, I took a trip to The Bahamas. I was only there for a week but this island became my home so quickly. I fell in love, and I cannot wait to go back. Until then, there are some things that I learned while staying in Nassau that I carry with me everywhere now.

1. Enjoy the view

Waking up every morning and looking out over the most beautiful, sparkling teal water never gets old. Though the Bahamian ocean may not be everywhere, there’s more beauty around you than you may think. Always take time to soak it in.

2. Don’t sweat the small stuff

As most people can relate to, I got sunburnt on maybe my second or third day out of the country. Of course, I was bummed at first, but I was still on one of the most gorgeous islands on earth! Little things will go wrong. Deal with them as they come and don’t freak out. There is usually more good than bad going on anyway.

3. Take care of yourself

Take risks, have fun, be brash and spontaneous! But don’t forget to stay healthy and safe. One afternoon in Nassau, a few of my friends took a snorkeling trip that sounded so awesome, but I was feeling sick. I wanted to go but I knew if I did, I’d just feel worse afterward. Be smart. Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated. Don’t let little things ruin your whole day.

4. Be nice to people when you’re stuck in crowds

We’ve all been in that situation, whether it be at a concert, a bar, a store or a party, where you’re just smooshed up against some stranger and there’s nothing you can do about it. Make the best of it! When you’re staying at a resort with hundreds of people trying to have fun, just like you, there are going to be some crowds. Try to make friends with the girl whose arm is stuck to your stomach with sweat. It won’t make things worse, that’s for sure.

5. It’s okay to have your own system

People are always going to tell you that there’s a certain “right” way to do something. Being in the Bahamas was one of the first extended periods of time where I wasn’t living under my parents' rules. My best friends and I roomed together and let me tell you, our room was basically always a mess. But, we had our own system! We all kept our piles and luggage in our separate corners, bikinis stayed hung up in the bathroom and we took turns carrying the key. It worked for us and we had a great week, regardless of not doing things the “typical” or “right” way.

6. Give back

While in The Bahamas, I had the chance to volunteer at Bahamas Children's Emergency Hostel. Seeing the kids there who were just happy to have a friend to run around and play with made me realize that it’s so easy to spread happiness. And we can do with all with resources we already have, whether physical things or not. Donate old clothes, books or toys or simply share a cheerful conversation. It’s worth it to know you’re making someone else genuinely happy.

7. Savor sharing your memories with those you love

There is nothing better than looking to your side and realizing that you’re having the time of your life with your best buds right next to you. This is not only applicable to people who are physically with you! Don’t forget to send text updates, pictures and the occasional call to people who can’t be with you. If you’re happy, there’s a good chance that it’s going to make them happy as well! Find joy in sharing your world with those who care about you.

8. Smile at everyone

Bahamian people always smile at you!! I can’t remember the last time a stranger smiled at me in America. It’s so simple and sweet and can make a person’s day. Positive energy can go a long, long way.

9. Don’t let the heat of the moment get to you

In life, you’re going to lash out at people just because they’re the person closest to you when you’re frustrated. Learn to let it roll off your back. Apologize and move on. When I snap, it’s almost always over something stupid. Being with a huge group of people, in the hot sun, who aren’t always going to see eye to eye with you is when you should take your cue to be the bigger person and walk away from the drama. It’s just not worth it.

10. Utilize naps

They say NYC is the city that never sleeps. I think The Bahamas is the country that never sleeps. Fun, laughter and adventures always continue on into the night. Memories are constantly being made. Don’t let yourself poop out on a good time. Sleep during the day when you can!! There’s nothing wrong with a little extra energy.

11. Do what you want, when you want

There are very few times when you can just do what you want. Most of us are always at work or in school where rules need to be followed. When it’s summer, when work or school lets out, when the weekend rolls around or when you’re in a beautiful foreign country on vacation, make the most of it!! Don’t let anything ruin your fun. When a day is gone, you never get it back. Never take advantage of the days you get to spend on nothing but yourself and your friends. Fill your free time with adventure and happiness and memories that will last forever!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
