Those of you who have Netflix understand that once you start a series, you are hooked until the end. At that point, you will have a few days of silence and no television to reminisce on how amazing that show was, then you begin the search for another! My mother and I began watching Netflix together about a year ago. We enjoy the nights that the popcorn is popped and the shows are watched! Some of our favorite series shows are Pretty Little Liars, Switched at Birth, The Fosters, and most recently, Gossip Girl.
Five things watching Gossip Girl has taught me:
1. Appreciate your life.
Someone will always have nicer clothes, a newer car, better hair, and the list goes on. However, you are the only one that can best live the life you have been given. Do not take that for granted. Be you.
2. Money is not everything.
Money cannot buy happiness. Gossip Girl proves this; revolving around the lives of most elite in Manhattan, they struggle with various issues, as we all do. At times it is evident that money causes many problems. Not in all cases, but as for Gossip Girl, the more money you have, the more trouble you will get involved in.
3. Love your family.
So many times we take our family for granted and how much we truly love each other. Seeing children disrespect their parents, no matter the age of the child, or the marital status of the parents, breaks my heart. All I have ever known is to respect your parents, along with everyone else; that is also how I will raise my children, a very long time from now.
4. True love is hard to find; when it is found, it's complicated.
We all, at some point in life, will experience the different stages of dating, love, or whatever you may call it. When we finally achieve what seems to be love, we do not know what to do with it. We make certain choices, that leads to what may become a long lasting relationship and then think of what life may have been like with someone else. On Gossip Girl, it is the same way; it's just complicated. Love is like a roller coaster, it only comes with the ups and downs.
5. Time spent with those you love is time well spent.
Enjoying time off from your busy, everyday schedule is essential to keeping your sanity. During this time, whether you are doing something you like or nothing at all, spend it with your loved ones. It is quality time with others that you will one day wish you would have used wisely.
Though Gossip Girl is my favorite show and I often find myself quoting the cast in my conversations with other people, I am thankful I was raised just the way I am. Whether you watch Gossip Girl or not, take these five points and think about them. Compare them to your life and the relationships you share with others.
Are you appreciative of what you have? You should be.
Do you love your family and all the times you spend together? You need to.
Are you envious of the lives of others? Don't be.
