It is beyond hard to believe that there are only six weeks left of my freshman year. Freshman year has been a roller coaster. From bad grades to good grades, new friends to old friends lost, this year has taught me more than I ever thought possible. Here are eight lessons I've learned.
1. Be yourself
There is so much pressure to act and behave a certain way, but if you conform to your surroundings, you will end up losing yourself. College is all about putting yourself out there, so don't change just to "fit in."
"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
2. Grades matter
So many times I thought that since I had already made it to college, my grades really didn't matter anymore. One thing I've learned so far: college is a lot of hard work.
3. Friendships matter
It is so important to develop close friendships. You need people by your side who are going through what you are. People to laugh with, cry with, celebrate with, and stress with. Find some good friends, and cling to them like waves cling to the shore. The friend you made the first week of college isn't going to be your best friend, and you may never speak to them again, but you will find and make even better ones.
4. Cherish it
This year has already flown by. I constantly find myself asking where the time went. Just strap on and try to enjoy the ride as much as possible.
5. Form relationships with your professors
These people are here to help you. There is no reason to disrespect them, as they are the ones who will help you get internships. Get to know them, they are people as well. Sometimes, you might even find out that you have something in common with them.
6. Let things go
Some things will upset you. Friends will hurt you. Life may seem like it is up against you. Understand when to let things go. Not everything has to be a battle. If you ball up your anger in your fist, you are the only one who gets burned.
7. Get involved
Find one club or activity at school that you enjoy, and invest yourself into it. Whether it is sports or Spanish club, there is a niche for everyone. By getting involved, you will meet like-minded people and form friendships you never would have anticipated.
8. Don't worry
I say this, but you will worry. You will be worried about grades, friends, and that major exam you have tomorrow. I have spent many a sleepless night often worried about things I can't control.
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
-Matthew 6:34
