The recent attacks on Paris have left many people around the world on edge worrying about what will happen next. I, for one, have been questioning whether or not good truly prevails in the presence of evil. With the devastated state that we are left in, there are two specific lessons I have been taught from these events that I believe we should all take away from this and keep in mind.
1. There are awful people in the world.
I remember when my friend read the news of the attacks to me from his iPhone. At first, I thought he was joking. How could so many innocent people be so abruptly taken from the world? I didn’t even think that this was something that was realistically possible. As the reality of the situation settled in my mind, I felt my heart sink. I recall wondering what could possibly compel people to want to do such a horrible thing. I wanted to retreat back to my childhood where the world was so ideal. Good would overcome evil. If you were a good citizen, you would be rewarded with kindness in return. The sad truth of growing up is that we realize the world is not as pristine as we are made to believe.
There are awful people living in this world with us. This does not mean you should be one of them. Regardless of what cruel and unfair events take place in your life, or others, do not become cynical. While there are bad people, there are also many great people. Everywhere I have looked this past week, I have seen people expressing their support for the victims of the Paris attacks. I have heard my friends desperately trying to contact people they know in Europe to ensure that they are safe. There will be people with sick minds no matter where you go; let them challenge you to be a better person than they are.
2. Life is precious.
I’ve read disheartening stories about the cries of people mourning over the lifeless bodies of their loved ones. I have heard of people I knew from high school dodging the attacks. These stories helped me to realize that life is a delicate gift that we are given. As quickly as we are brought into this world, we can be so suddenly taken from it. I do not believe that this is a reason to be afraid of dying. I see this as a reason to truly live life to the fullest.
First, be present. Become aware of the little things in life. The way your friends laugh at the stupid little things you do. The way you can’t help giggle at their weird quirks as well.
Second, appreciate everything that surrounds you. Love the way the warm sun on your skin makes you close your eyes and grin as you walk to class.Instead of pouting because it seems like it will never stop pouring rain, take off your shoes and have fun walking barefoot through the puddles on your free time. Find the beauty in everything you see and do. Last, do not hold back your emotions. Love unconditionally and let your friends and family know how much you enjoy spending time with them. Always express how things make you feel.
The attacks on Paris were shocking, but I promise you, they will not be the last display of evil that you will see within your lifetime. Be aware of this, but never allow the negative things in life prevent you from living out every second in your life with passion and excitement. Life can be taken from us so quickly; it is important to live with purpose and love.
