Freshman year. Quite the experience, am I right? There is so much freshmen learn from their first time being away from home. When I first got here, it was a pretty overwhelming feeling, and now here I am one year down, with a ton of new memories. I learned a lot from freshman year and it goes a little like this:
1. Time management.
Time management is everything in college. If you manage your time well, I discovered there is time for everything, but never time for nothing.
2. Studying.
After going to school for twelve years, I finally learned how to study and what works best for me this year.
3. Laundry.
Yes, it took me eighteen years, but I finally had to do my own laundry. I learned to bring basically all my clothes to school to avoid doing laundry as long as I could.
4. Be involved.
During first semester it was somewhat difficult for me to be involved with the adjustment of being away, but the more involved I was in school and activities, the better I did at managing all of them.
5. Greek life.
It sounds really cliché, but when I first joined Greek life, I really did not know what I was getting myself into. After spending a school year with my sisters and girls in other houses, I learned that the Greek community will give you some of the best memories of your life.
6. Call home.
At first, the freedom was awesome and it was “cool" to be away from home. As the year continues, your parents just worry about you. I found myself calling home more often than expected.
7. Netflix.
If you have stuff to do, do not start watching Netflix. Binge watching is probably the most dangerous part of college.
8. Caffeine.
Coffee, pop, anything with caffeine will soon become your best friend. Nothing else can really get you through the all-nighters without a little chemical aid from caffeine.
9. Stress.
There is work to be done 24/7 and even when I thought I was done, I wasn't. Part of that came from learning how to deal with stress and organizing my time to get it all done.
Don't be afraid of change. A lot of changes happened for me this year, and it's the reason I was able to experience such a great first year.
