This School Year Has Taught Me A Valuable Lesson In Time Management

Be careful with how much work you pile onto yourself, and your body and mind will end up thanking you.

The importance of not overloading yourself with work cannot be overstated enough. I think it’s a great idea to seek opportunity wherever you can for sure, but make sure that the amount of work you take on is something that you can adjust to comfortably.

I have made the mistake of biting off more than I can chew in terms of acquiring work, and applied to and acquired multiple jobs. I found myself rushing to beat the clock at every waking moment to try and balance school, work, and my social life, and often times I was losing.

Not only was I sorely failing at multi-tasking, but I was hammering away at my body in the process. I was losing sleep over trying to complete responsibilities from the day before, and honestly, things were taking a toll on my body. I woke up with huge bags under my eyes every morning and was trying to fight back the urge to fall asleep everywhere I went. I realized I needed to change something up.

For one, I needed to lighten my load to something that was much more manageable.

I looked at my schedule and realized that my dog walking job took up a huge chunk of my day and my flexibility, and more than once it has caused me to have to go out of my way in order to complete homework and manage my social life. That was the first thing I dropped.

The next thing I needed to take care of was drop a class that wasn’t necessary for me to graduate but was causing me to lose a lot of sleep. It was a class that was unnecessarily difficult and required a lot of time outside class, and was about a subject I didn’t actually need to take to graduate, so I dropped it at no penalty before the drop date.

Once I dealt with these two things, I found myself having time to do my homework again, take time to have a social life around campus, and continue to maintain my current job at the DePaul Telefund which is super flexible and which I love. The extra focus I can have on schoolwork is a sure plus. Clearly, the mistake I made was saying yes to everything before I considered if I could actually handle it, but I think it’s important to organize your time to make sure this does not happen to you as well.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
