Lent And Vent

The Christian season certainly has a lot to vent about.

In the midst of the season of sugar, spice, and everything nice (Yes, I mean Valentine's Day!), it can be hard to appreciate the season of Lent. Many people during this Christian season give up something in their life that they believe to be "self-consuming" so that they can better focus their heart, mind, and soul on Christ instead of material things.

Sounds cool, right? Dutiful even-- the servant life that many devoted believers strive for as the purpose of their life.

But can we, for just a second, take a second to vent about Lent?

As a 20-something college striving-to-be-a-devoted-Christian woman, it can be difficult to really give up anything at all. What do poor college kids give up when they're scrounging for money and food as it is? Are the "little things" that many Christians give up during Lent-- chocolate, sweets, pop, cheese-- really "worth it" when these things are so hard to avoid in college life?

And let's just touch on how difficult it can to be to keep from enjoying our favorite things. For this Lenten year, I gave up sweets of any kind and the use of an elevator. I have multiple exams coming up that are sky-rocketing my stress levels, in addition to the monthly rise of female hormones. Do you know how bad I want to sink my teeth into a chocolate bar?! And that class on third floor after coming in from negative temperatures, with a heavy backpack? Do you think I want to climb those stairs?!

So, if this giving up thing is so difficult, why do countless numbers of believers partake in the festivities of Lent? Why do we purposefully frustrate ourselves? What is the point, really?

Perhaps the point is so that we can gather in our weakness and complaints with other believers and share a community of frustration. Perhaps the point is for us to realize how much time and devotion we both spend and give to material items.

Perhaps, the point is to not give something up, but instead gain something.

We're gaining love by losing love we give to other things.

It might seem contradictory, this idea of gaining by losing. I'd bet, however, that if you devoted a little bit of your time and energy on trying to add a positive habit into your life and putting more of your energy into carving out time for Christ, you would begin to understand the joy of Lent, instead of the things worth venting about.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
