Everyone has their own story, their own path, and although we can try to believe that we are prepared for what will come, no one is every truly prepared. As humans, so many things in this life are out of our control, yet every day we insist on trying to grasp the unknown. We constantly fight the inevitable and stretch our fingers out to an intangible object which cannot physically be grasped.
Love being at the top of the list of intangible objects that we continuously try to control in our lives is probably the most perplexing yet exciting of them all. At one moment Love can grab hold of you and consume your entire life with happiness; but the very next day, that same feeling can shake you into a pit of despair and grief. It is however, this inability to control Love, that makes life so unexplainable special. But like many have asked in the past and as many will ask in the future; how do we know when we have found true love? How do we know that the feeling we have is not just false hope or Love’s counterpart, Lust? What signs or inexplicable events can warn us that we have found someone we care about more than ourselves
1. They are your muse.
They are the catalyst to your success. Being with them makes you wish you were better, solely because you want them to have better. You attempt to be more successful, understanding, stronger, smarter, and all around a better human being. It is not that you do not feel worthy of them but you want them to be proud of you.
2. Every flaw they have is cute and the flaws of others… well you’re not with them.
They may not be without imperfections but ever flaw that they have you find adorable and cute. You point them out, sometimes in humor but it is merely because you enjoy that others do not have such characteristics. It is these strange quirks that attract you to them, because no one else in your social circle is at all like them.
3. You have to force yourself to give them space.
It may be corny but when they aren’t around, you miss them “like the sun misses the flower; like the sun misses the flower in the depths of winter”.You honestly hang out with them more than any of your other friends. A long pause is not strange to you as you are just happy to be with them. This can sometimes be an issue within relationships as you may smother each other. So even though giving that Loved one space is difficult it is a must so that both of you stay sane.
4. You would do anything to make the other happy.
Their happiness is just as important as your own and you think of ways to surprise them just so you can see them smile. You buy them flowers, plan out special dates and find first experiences so that you both can share special memories together. At times you may forget due to your own life agendas but honestly if they ever asked you for anything, you would do it for them.
5. They are one of, if not THE most beautiful person you have ever met.
Every time you see them, the first thought that comes in your mind is how beautiful they are. They are the complete package in your mind and every time your eyes meet, a tsunami of comfort and anticipation hit you. You wish you could hold them in your arms for hours. To be honest you probably get sexual aroused just from thinking about them, even after the honeymoon phase of your relationship is long gone.
For some, Love can be felt instantaneously by complete strangers on a Friday night, while for others it can be built from a friendship that has taken a step out from the boarders of the friend zone. But for most students in college, Love seems to usually come from more unexpected and unusual manners. Maybe it was with that guy you met while studying for Finals in Geisel. Maybe it was at that Greek party between your Fraternity and her Sorority or less unlikely, maybe you fell in Love with that ‘special’ friend who came over all the time, otherwise known as the ‘Friend with Benefits’.
No matter the catalyst of your affections, Love is something we as humans honestly cannot control no matter how hard we try. But the truth to the matter is you won’t know the extent of your love until it’s challenged by other forces. It is easy to Love someone when times are good and in your mind that special someone couldn’t possible do anything wrong. But to Love another when the road is bumpy and you feel as though a fog or haze has clouded your vision; this is when you truly discover the full lengths of your Love. You honestly hold on to past memories the best you can to push through these difficult times and pray that your partner is as well. You do this because no matter how heart wrenching and mind draining it may feel, to not have them at all in your life is a thousand times worse.
