Learning to Drive
I have a fear of driving.
I've had it for a while.
But that fear seemed to lessen
When you looked at me and smiled.
"Try driving my car," you said
"there's no one else around."
I got tense and shook my head
and just stared at the ground.
Next thing I knew you were out the car
running over to my side.
You opened the door, I hesitated
"Just take it for a ride."
It was too late for me to tell you no.
I found myself taking your seat.
I gripped the wheel, held my breath
and felt my racing heart beat.
A few minutes felt like forever;
I didn't get us far and the car moved slow.
I knew by the look on your face
that I hadn't gotten us where you wanted to go.
You had thought you failed;
That you hadn't taught me thing.
We parked and I took the other seat,
and listened to you try to sing.
Maybe you didn't fix me,
and maybe there are some things I just can't do.
But all I know is when I drive,
I always think of you.
