12 things to grow from.

What I Learned During My Freshman Year of College
Megan Miller

No one goes into college knowing exactly what to expect. This year has been a learning experience in and outside of class, mainly when it comes to surviving without mom and dad.

1. It’s okay to get a C every so often!

Yes it’s good to aim high and strive for those straight A’s, but don’t beat yourself up about one or two bad assignments. Stay positive because there will be ways to bounce back and maintain a great GPA!

2.You can't live off of Ramen noodles.

As appealing as it is, you can’t eat Ramen every day for every meal. It’s an easy and cheap way to fill up your stomach before a late night study session, but you need real food.

3. You don’t have to go out every night of the weekend.

Staying in is okay! Having a calm night is okay! Sometimes after a stressful week you just need time to breathe, alone.

4. Class is the reason you’re here, go to it.

Skipping class isn’t cool. It actually can affect your grade a lot more than you think. If you skip class for no reason, you’re just lazy. Think about all of the money you’re wasting. Tuition and textbook money down the drain.

5. You won’t be friends with everyone and that’s okay.

Not everyone gets along, but that's actually alright. Not everyone will click right away, and forced friendships are not sustainable. Having separate friendships is a good way to stay active and stay involved!

6. Smile at people on campus, it will brighten your day and theirs!

Walking to class on a cold rainy day is never fun. But staring at your phone the whole time is not the only option! Keeping your head up and glancing at the people around you will definitely make you feel better!

7. You can cook anything in a microwave if you really try!

I've found myself without any food except a box of pasta and some cheese sticks. Home made mac and cheese? I think yes.

8. Being involved on campus is the best thing you can do.

Keeping yourself busy will not only make the weeks go by faster and the weekends come sooner, but it will also push you to do your work in a timely manner. Just make sure you have enough time to breathe!

9. USE YOUR DINING PLAN!!!

"Free" food is there for a reason! Use all of your swipes or dining dollars instead of spending real money!

10. Get to know the professors in your major!

Not only are these professors there to help you with your classwork, but they also have connections in the real world! Some may be able to help you find internships, grants, or even a job post-graduation!

11. Don’t let your social life affect your school work!

You are in college for one reason: to learn. Having a social and personal life is very important, but make sure you put your schoolwork at the top of your list!

12. Take care of yourself.

If you need time alone, take time alone. If you need to eat better, eat better. The most important thing to remember your first year of college is to take care of your mind and your body. If days get so busy that you forget to eat, take notice of that and try to change your schedule.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
