When I first started college, I never would have imagined that I would be in a sorority. It turns out that Greek Life at small universities is much different from that at larger universities. Here are some of the things you will find if you decide to become a part of Greek Life at a small school.
You don’t have trouble choosing which sorority to rush, because there aren’t many choices.
Maybe your school has as many as four or five choices. Some only have one.
You get to see your sisters literally around every corner.
There is nothing better than seeing at least one sister on every single walk across campus.
Your chapter is full of diversity.
There are girls from multiple races, religions, ethnicities, social classes and walks of life.
The “sorority girl” stereotype doesn’t apply to every girl.
Many of you never would have seen yourselves joining a sorority. You certainly don’t fit the “typical” mold.
There are still the stereotypical “sorority girls.”
There are those who still love pumpkin spiced lattes, craft like it’s their jobs and shower themselves in Lilly Pulitzer and monograms (bonus points if it’s a Lilly monogram).
You live in an apartment with at least one sister, and even more live just across the hall…and upstairs…and in the building next to you…basically they live all around you.
Having sisters live with you and near you is great. Not sure what to wear to recruitment? Someone has your back, and you can always take a look in her closet.
Sometimes in chapter meetings, someone mistakenly says, “that’s what they do in real…uh..other…sororities.
“Um, I meant sororities at real schools..no, big schools. Big sororities at big schools.”
You are so glad that your sorority is not a part of a traditional rush.
How do those other girls do it? You are content with the less hectic (comparatively) recruitment process.
Formal is a huge deal. It’s the big event of the year.
Always classy, always fabulous. We wait the entire year for this particular night.
The university is always keeping your chapter in check.
They mean well.
Going to another university for a social is totally normal.
What do you mean you don’t understand? You actually have fraternities at your school? Yeah, our social is only a 30-minute drive.
“You’re in a sorority? Is it like it is in the movies?”
Nope. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
