During the Super Bowl, Beyonce, Coldplay and Bruno Mars performed at the halftime show. There were several not so hidden messages about equality. As always, this led to controversy. There were many LBGT flags that waved over Chris Martin's head. There were colorful flowers and many things represented acceptance. In the past decade, several newer terms became present in the LBGT community, which have left some people confused about what terms are appropriate.
Here are some terms that everyone should know. There are about a dozen more, but there are the most used and confused terms.
Gender
How someone socially identifies oneself. This refers to behaviors and roles within society.
Sex
How one biologically identifies oneself. This refers to physical characteristics.
Lesbian
Females that are attracted to females. Example) Ellen DeGeneres
Bisexual
Males who are attracted to males and females. Females who are attracted to females and males.
Homosexual/Gay
Males who are attracted to males. Females who are attracted to females.
Transgender
A male that transitions into a female. This person would most likely identify as female. A female that transitions into a male. This person would most likely identify as male. Example) Laverne Cox
Heterosexual/Straight
Females that are attracted to males. Males that are attracted to females.
Intersex
A person who was born with male and female organs. For example, someone can be born with ovaries and...
Asexual
A person who does not have a sexual desire.
Pansexual
A person who is attracted to people despite gender identity (not just men and women)
Cisgender
A male who was born male who still identifies as male. A female who was born female who still identifies as female.
