Es fácil imaginar a la abuela típica. Para la mayoría de nosotros cuando pensamos en nuestras abuelas, pensamos en las mujeres mayores y amables que miman y malcrían a sus nietos. En muchos casos, esta opinión es muy correcta. Sin embargo, la caracterización de este tipo de abuela no aplica para las abuelas hispanas.

Indudablemente, las abuelas hispanas superan alguno que otro tipo de abuela en la cocina. ¿Has escuchado de una abuela que cocine tamales terribles? Yo tampoco. Lamentablemente, esta característica de la abuela típica es la única que es consistente a la opinión de la sociedad en general.

La mayoría de la gente que han interactuado con las abuelas hispanas saben que firmes y exigentes se pueden poner. Es interesante porque no tratan de ser malas la mayoría del tiempo. Simplemente las abuelas hispanas dicen lo que estén pensando, y no tienen vergüenza en absoluto de decirlo. La abuela siempre va a cocinar cosas riquísimas. Pero, si ella ve que uno de sus amigos o miembros de la familia han subido de peso, entonces Abuela no vacilará decir, “¡Dios mío. Pareces una vaca!”

Esta audacia se origina del orgullo insalvable de las abuelas hispanas. Los comentarios francos no son solamente para la gente que ella conoce. Si hay alguna cosa que Abuela le tiene que decirle a alguien, la prudencia no debe interponerse. Cualquier declaración que pudiera ser interpretada como racista, sexista o de alguna otra manera inapropiada puede castigar a una inocente víctima. No importa si la víctima lo merece o no. Por ejemplo, si Doña Bruni piensa que pidió un bistec sin setas y el bistec viene con setas, Doña Bruni no tendrá problema en acusar a la mesera de intento de asesinato, pues debió haber sabido de las alergias de la pobre abuela. No importa si la Doña especificó las condiciones preferidas del bistec, la mesera va a tener la culpa.

A pesar de todas las situaciones posibles en que una abuela pueda ofender a alguien, no habrá duda que ella tenga un amor fuerte para la gente cercana a ella. Aunque a veces son demasiado francas, siempre ofrecen el apoyo, amor y sabiduría a la gente que lo necesitan. En verdad, las abuelas hispanas son individuales muy especiales.
