I change my 15-year life plan every single day. The more I learn, the more job options become appealing. One day I want to be a lawyer and the next, I want to drop out of college and move to a tropical island to write my first novel.
However, there have always been two constants in my daydreams -- New York City and writing.
No matter what my financial status or career, I want to be surrounded by skyscrapers with a pen in my hand. That’s why accepting an internship offer with Odyssey this summer was like watching one of my daydreams come true. Not only do I get to work with inspiring and intelligent men and women each day, but I get to work in what I consider to be the greatest city in the world.
Many people complain about the abundance of “millennial listicles” or open letters, but the bottom line is this -- Odyssey helps people. Odyssey helps writers learn from the professional edits made to their articles. It sparks conversations, opinions and creates new ideas. It connects people around the world.
I cannot wait to be part of a group that stands for expression, respect, dedication and freedom of speech. Writers’ words end up in somebody’s head. Sometimes that head is buoyant and sometimes it’s sinking. Sometimes those words lend support, help or comfort.
I’m most excited to meet the other interns. I love meeting people that share the same interests and aspirations that I do. Exploring the city, and by exploring I mean trying all of the trendy food, will be just one of the highlights of my internship experience. Getting to make connections, gain professional knowledge and have fun while doing it makes this internship the perfect summer experience.
Odyssey is a dream internship for an aspiring writer and New York City is the perfect backdrop. Having an adorable office dog around doesn’t hurt, either.
