When I started looking for an internship all I wanted was to get the skills to be to apply at the agency I always dreamed of working at after I graduated. So when an internship opportunity opened up at that agency I applied right away. And then I got a phone interview. And then I got an in-person interview. And then, I got the job. It wasn't just my resume that got me the job, it took a lot of work and networking to score the job of my dreams.
1. Put yourself out there
I met my now boss at a speaking event. I was doing the blog coverage for the event and was drawn to her energy, which made writing the blog easy. I made an effort to attend an event on a weeknight, went beyond attending by being involved in the event by writing, and meeting her after the event.
If you know what field you want to be involved in, find events that will connect you with the professionals in that field. Step outside your comfort zone to find your fit in your career.
2. Make connections
Whether it is in person or online, making the connection will make you more memorable than someone who hasn't made the effort to connect. Follow the company's social media and connect with employees on LinkedIn. Keeping up to date with their accounts will let you know what events they will be attending or hosting.
3. Reach out
Before the internship was posted I sent an email to the agency letting them now I would be around for the summer and would be willing to volunteer with any events or projects if they needed the help. Two weeks after I sent that email, the internship was posted.
Find ways that you can help out the company you want to work for in a way that will help you too.
Don't be afraid to chase your dreams, who knows! You might reach your dreams before you planned it.
