Obtaining an internship in your desired field is the best thing you can do as a college student. The importance of an internship during college cannot be overstated. Not only does an internship provide you with hands-on experience in the work place, it also provides you with numerous connections which could be useful later down the road (think after graduation).
Growing up with a mother in Human Resources definitely has its benefits when it comes time to landing an internship. From resume reviewing to interview tips, I've been blessed to have her guidance. Now that it is internship interviewing season (or at least that's what I call it), here are some things to avoid during the interview process so that you can land the internship of your dreams!
1. No resume mistakes.
First and foremost, your resume should be be clean and clear. Be sure that you correct any inaccuracies or truths stretched/ embellishmented (like where you wrote "cash management" but actually meant selling tickets at your brother's basketball games).
Secondly, everything you submit, including your resume, cover letter and application, needs to be error free. Proofread everything you are going to send and if possible, have someone else read over it as well. Do not depend on your computer's spell check!
Lastly, include relevant skills/experience. The hiring manager does not care that you worked the register at McDonald's when you are applying for a design internship. Tailor your resume to each application.
2. Do not miss the deadline.
It seems obvious but check when the application deadline is and get the application in on time. In addition to this, be meticulous in your efforts to complete the application. Make sure everything is completed and once again, submit it on time!
3. No skimming over company information.
To really stand out during the interview, you need to understand the company. This means no skimming over the company's website. By the time the interview rolls around, you should have an understanding of what the company stands for, its products and services, its culture, its clients and why you would be the perfect fit.
4. Remember to send the thank you email!
Always, always, always follow up with a thank you email within the first 48 hours. Address the interviewer directly thanking them for their time and remind them why they should hire you. Check out some sample ones here. This will leave the interviewer with a good impression and it will show how serious you are about the position.
It is possible to land the internship of your dreams. Don't let anyone tell you differently. Good luck!
