Are you a student? Have you thought about what you want to do after college, or even better, how you are going to get a job you wanted? Because they don't just let a college student with no prior experience build a hotel or manage a multi-million dollars fund. Working in an internship is your answer. So prepare your résumé, put on your business casual attire, and go to your school's internship fair. Here are some tips for you:
1. Work on your resume
Make sure your résumé is well-polished. Have your career services center, your professor, or someone with experience look at it. Make sure it is one page and that there are no grammar errors or misspelled words. There are résumé templates online for you to grab and look at.
2. Do research prior to the event
Have a look at the companies that will be at the event. Go online, look at their websites, check out the opportunities they are offering, and prepare to ask questions about what interest you. Recruiters will be impressed if they see you've done your homework.
3. Make a good impression
The way you to talk recruiter is no different than talking to others in daily life. Give a firm handshake and maintain strong eye-contact. Just be confident, believe in yourself, and know that you are awesome). Introduce yourself in 30 seconds (your skills, your major, and what you are looking for at this event).
Next, show them you've done your homework. Ask about opportunities you have looked at and are interested in, or ask them if they know of any other positions you might be a good fit for.
4. Follow Up
Now now, don't just stay there all day. You gotta let them talk to others students, too. Simply hand them your résumé, ask for a business card, then say goodbye. Go home and write them a thank-you email, and to follow up with them about further opportunities.
After all that, give yourself a pat on the back. You've done great!
