Lady Gaga is known around the globe for her shocking outfits and daring style, but she has just come out with a powerful message to share with college students. Gaga released the music video for her single, "Till It Happens To You," on September 17th, 2015.
The video begins with a disclaimer that states, "The following contains graphic content that may be emotionally unsettling but reflects the reality of what is happening daily on college campuses."
The video does display some pretty graphic and disturbing scenes of young adults being sexually assaulted. The victims included female students as well as a female-to-male transgender student, proving that no one is safe from these despicable acts. As the video progresses, the victims are haunted by flashbacks of their experiences, unable to escape the past they have tried to suppress. Some were attacked while in an intoxicated, hazy state while others were sober and held down by brute force.
Phrases such as "I am worthless," "Sometimes I hate myself," and "Believe me" are written across the students' bodies, acting as visual representations of the unexpressed pain that is felt deep down inside. It was not until the end that they accepted help from others, wearing the words "Listen," "You will hear me," "I am worthy," and more.
The National Institute of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics put together a report entitled The Sexual Victimization of College Women, including the following statistics:
- It is estimated that the percentage of completed or attempted rape victimization among women in higher educational institutions may be between 20 percent and 25 percent over the course of a college career.
- Among college women, 9 in 10 victims of rape and sexual assault knew their offender.
- Almost 12.8 percent of completed rapes, 35 percent of attempted rapes, and 22.9 percent of threatened rapes happened during a date.
- 2.8 percent experienced either a completed rape (1.7 percent) or an attempted rape (1.1 percent) during the six-month period in which the study was conducted. Of victims, 22.8 percent were victims of multiple rapes. If this data is calculated for a calendar year period, nearly 5 percent of college women are victimized during any given calendar year.
- It is estimated that for every 1,000 women attending a college or university, there are 35 incidents of rape each academic year.
- Off-campus sexual victimization is much more common among college women than on-campus victimization. Of victims of completed rape 33.7 percent were victimized on campus and 66.3 percent off campus.
- Less than 5 percent of completed or attempted rapes against college women were reported to law enforcement. However, in 2/3 of the incidents the victim did tell another person, usually a friend, not family or school officials.
The issue of sexual assault on college campuses is far too real nowadays. As displayed at the end of the video, "one in five college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes" and that those seeking help can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE.
Let's make a change.
