On Sept. 18, Lady Gaga released her new single “Til It Happens To You” along with a video that has captivated media attention across the country.
The song and video are about an important issue relating to college campuses: sexual assault.
Composed by Diane Warren, “Til It Happens To You” was written in conjunction with the documentary “The Hunting Ground” which was released in January and has since been played on college campuses to enlighten students, faculty, and parents about the lack of attention sexual assault victims are given from their colleges.
The video that was released with the song, written and directed by Catherine Hardwick, tells the story of women getting sexually assaulted at their college. It is raw, graphic, and exactly what people need to see in order to understand the severity of the issue. The video shows the pain these women suffer through during and after the attack, which brings to attention the fact that the most damaging and heartbreaking moments can often come after the attack itself.
Sexual assault has become a huge issue on college campuses, and the worst part is that college campuses do little to nothing to prevent this from happening or even give victims the attention they so desperately need.
In “The Hunting Ground,” several women from colleges such as Amherst University, University of Connecticut, and Vanderbilt University, share their stories about sexual assault and how the colleges did little to nothing to help the victims after the attacks. The film documents these women as they take action to bring awareness to colleges, the media, and the government about the issue and encourage everyone to acknowledge that something needs to be done.
In working with Warren, Hardwick, and the producers of “The Hunting Ground” Lady Gaga joins the campaign to raise awareness on the growing problem of sexual assault on college campuses. “Till It Happens To You” has captured the attention of millions of people across the country and inspired victims of sexual assault to share their stories and join the movement to end sexual assault on college campuses. By creating the video, Gaga and the others hope, not only to turn people’s attention to the issue of sexual assault, but also to encourage victims to share their stories and join the movement to make a change.
