Lady Gaga Releases New Song "Til It Happens To You," Confronting Rape Culture

“I was raped.” Those three words form a sentence that many people can utter truthfully, but often goes unspoken. As a matter of fact, statistically speaking, one in every five women in college will be raped before they graduate… if they graduate. Outside of college, the statistic jumps to one in every three. Rape, especially within America, has always been a very taboo subject. It’s the only crime that has to be proven “legitimate.” This is often the reason many rapes go unreported. However, the way we as a society look at rape culture is changing.

We, the general public, often perceive the handling of rape cases as the “SVU treatment.” While I am a fan of Law and Order, it’s wholly unrealistic. Rapists often never make it to trial and when they do, they rarely ever get convicted. Sometimes, parental rights can even be offered to the accused. Rape is easily one of the most traumatic crimes for the survivor and their families.

Last Friday, Lady Gaga, 29, released her most powerful music video to date, “Til It Happens To You.” Along with the release, it was announced that a portion of the proceeds would be donated directly to organizations helping survivors of sexual assault. The song was written by Diane Warren, 59, and Lady Gaga herself for the new documentary The Hunting Ground. The film exposes the grim reality of rape on college campuses. Even now, it’s already received very positive reviews. Rape is a very traumatic experience. That should go without saying… but unfortunately, it is not stressed enough.

Upon viewing the video, I realized that I could not recall a time when another mainstream artist tackled such a touchy subject. (Kudos, Gaga.) The video itself is very powerful, showcasing the reality of what sexual assault really is and who is really affected by it. Shot entirely in black and white, it can easily be said that the effect is quite jarring. It’s the depiction of every parent and every woman’s worst nightmare. One can hope that with the release of this video, the attitude towards rape culture will change as well. True justice for all of those victimized will only be gained when we start speaking openly about the issue. Not avoiding it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
