When two telenovelas emerge, only one can be the best. La Viuda Negra and El Señor de Los Cielos have the same basic idea. The story of a drug lord, in a way it is a bibliography, but for money making purposes some things are fake or exaggerated. The twist in La Viuda Negra is that the drug lord is not a man, but a women Griselda Blanco. The perspective of the cartel life of a women and a man does not necessarily shift. After months of watching one telenovela after another I have came to the conclusion that La Viuda Negra is way better than El Señor de Los Cielos.
In the Latino community there is a stereotype engraved that women are solely for the needs of men. La Viuda Negra breaks this stereotype. In an exaggerated way it shows women that they can do anything a man can. It also shows that other women are capable of being in this business. For example, Griselda finds women to transport her merchandise and gives them the opportunity to do better in life money wise. The women in La Viuda Negra are not solely treated as sex objects like in El Señor de Los Cielos. Most of the women in El Señor de Los Cielos are prostitutes. It is fine be a sex worker, but these women are not being treated like humans.
Griselda Blanco takes control of her life and does not take anything from anyone. It's no coincidence that her name means black widow; if her husband betrays her she has no problem "taking care of" him. She had the guts to kill the father of her son because he betrayed her. Her number one goal was to become the Queen of Cocaine and she did not allow anyone to get in her way. Griselda Blanco was concentrated on accomplishing her goals. The telenovela does not revolve around the drama of her personal life rather it revolves around the obstacles she had to go through due to being in a cartel.
In El Señor de Los Cielos, the main character Aurelio Casillas focuses too much on his complicated love life more then on his cartel. In the first season he is married, but loves another women Monica Robles which is his enemy in the cartel world. He goes back and forth from being with his mistress and manipulating her in order to gain more love from her. In La Viuda Negra the only love that Griselda fought for was the one from her son.
La Viuda Negra is way better than El Señor de Los Cielos. It can not compete with the level of actual action in La Viuda Negra. El Señor de Los Cielos is merely a drama while La Viuda Negra gets down to business, the hardship that a drug lord faces due to their involvement in the business.
DISCLAIMER - In reality for the most part cartels are not beneficial for society, but in a twisted way one cartel was better than another.
