As a Latina, I pride myself in my culture and traditions that have made me who I am today. Through my years I have realized that some of the things my family and I do are not relatable to everyone around me because of my heritage. While some of these are completely exaggerated and stretched, I wanted to share my thoughts on things only Hispanics may relate to.
1. You immediately get stared at when you start talking a mile per minute in Spanish on the phone with your mom
2. When “El Gordo y La Flaca” are not just two words describing somebody’s body type
3. In high school, suddenly everyone wanted to be your friend in Spanish class
4. When you eat beans and rice so much you basically are beans and rice
5. When you have not met all of your cousins because a) you have so many and b) they live in other countries
6. When you go all across the town, city, or state because your abuelita refuses to eat the food at the local super market…where’s the Goya??? Queso duro?
7. You came out of the womb with a fantastic sense of rhythm and hips to go with it
8. People can’t ever pronounce your name…just sound it out. Syllables people!
9. The first Selena you think about is Quintanilla
10. You wear hoops that are bigger than your face
11. When you’re sick there are two, but only two remedies... either Vicks or any natural tea
12. You used to secretly wish your high school experience was going to be as interesting as Rebelde’s
As I mentioned earlier, while some of these points are obviously stretched, it's a fun way to describe just how unique my ethnicity is and the things that describe my cherished culture. Gracias, mi gente!
