So you're in college and you have decided you want to take on the brave world that is the film industry. You've spent hours perfecting your storyboards and you've spent days in the editing bay, you've looked up your professor on IMDB to see exactly what they've accomplished and you've even questioned yourself if you really want to tackle this world of filmmaking. I've wanted to be in the film industry for as long as I can remember. Here are some things I've learned about myself and how I know my major is the perfect fit for me. For all of you other film majors out there, I know these will fit you perfectly as well. Some people don't quite understand why you chose the be a film major, but if any of these listed below pertain to you, then you know you've made the right decision.
1. You notice the continuity in all movies or TV shows.
For example in this episode of "Friday Night Lights"; the character is seen with no backpack on when knocking on the door, but once the camera angle switches he is wearing the backpack, but then it switches back and he's not wearing it again.
2. You're not the weirdest person in your group of friends.
All film majors are a little strange, but you feel more comfortable with yourself in your classes than with your friends or family. Your classmates understand your weirdness too.
3. You suck at taking tests.
You always have, and you always will. Tests just aren't your thing. From not knowing how to study to the actual test itself.
4. Your non-film major friends no longer think it's weird when they see you with a camera and tripod on campus.
At first they would ask, "Why do you have a camera?," or they would think it's weird when they saw you filming something or someone on campus, but now they understand, and sometimes are the stars in your films.
5. Watching movies is a struggle.
You get lost in your mind thinking about how they created the scene or how good the camera angles are and then suddenly it's five minutes later and you have no idea what's going on in the movie.
6. Everyone asks you where your backpack is.
You never bring a backpack to class because what is taking notes? All you need is your flash drive and headphones since 90 percent of what you do in class is on a computer.
7. Ruining a movie for your non-major friends because you've analyzed it so much to them.
You've learned to stop doing this.
8. While traveling you see a place and get the perfect idea for a movie.
It always happens, but you never end up following through with it.
9. Family gatherings are always interesting.
Every time you're with your family someone always asks, "Are you still doing the film thing?"
10. The look on someone's face whenever you tell them your major.
This is my favorite because this face is priceless. It's always the same look and you know they're thinking, "You're going to fail." So you just soft-smile and remind yourself that yes; yes you do want to travel and make movies instead of working a 9-5 job in a cubicle.
11. You've questioned your major a thousand times.
Sometimes you wonder if you're making the right decision about your major. Then you remember how much you love filmmaking and how you wouldn't want to do anything else.
