I remember back in kindergarten, being taught about kindness and not really knowing what defined the word. As I grew older, I saw the fundamental meaning behind the word. Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate, but there is much more to it.
Many people think about kindness being monetary, but it does not have to be. Kindness can be as simple as telling the girl in class next to you that you really like her outfit. Kindness can be shown to the man on the street suffering, by buying him a sandwich to eat. Kindness can be spreading positivity, love, and support to strangers all over the world.
Lately, the world is seeming to lack these acts of kindness. People are so fixated on competing with others and proving something. No one wants to acknowledge something that will make someone else's day.
Where has the meaning of this word gone?
Nowadays, I find that people are so concerned with social media, they think "likes" or "favorites" on a picture or tweet, define kindness. I do think complimenting and motivating others through social media is very useful. However, the power of the word is what really matters.
When someone hurts you, out of human nature, you want to make that person feel horrible to make yourself feel better. It's a continuous cycle that we all are apart of. Sometimes it may be hard to be nice to someone that you cannot stand, but what does being nasty do?
As we can see, the more hate we are spreading, the more problems this world is facing. If we can continue to be kind to everyone, even those who hurt us, we may feel happier as a whole world.
